| 09.06.05 The Foresters
opened their conference season with a thrilling five-game win over
Grace College. HU came out strong and took control of the match
winning the first two games 30-28 and 30-26. They got all of
their hitters involved, which kept the Lancer blockers guessing, and
countered Grace's attack with some solid defense.
In games three and four, the Foresters
looked like a totally different team. Poor passing and setting
and hitting errors plagued HU and allowed Grace to win both games
30-15 and 31-29 to even the match. In game five, the Foresters
fell behind 7-3 early, but Kellie Hanson and Amy Wilson came up with
some clutch serving and rallied HU to the 15-12 win.
"Coming into the match, we knew Grace
would have a scrappy defense and that we would have to attack the ball
very aggressively in order to control the tempo of the match," said
Coach Schroeder. "Our ball control in the first two games was
pretty good, but it was terrible in games three and four. We
made a lot of mistakes, but I'm proud of the way the team got it
together to pull out the win."
Heidi Christner led the Forester attack
with 15 kills in the match. Renee Biberstine added 11 and
Tiffany Malfait had nine. Several HU frontliners got involved in
the blocking with Kayley Cervenka leading the team with four.
Biberstine and Malfait each tallied three. Kellie Hanson
finished with 38 assists in the match and three aces while Stephanie
Stearns had 45 digs and four aces. With the win, the women
improve to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in the MCC.
