09.01.07 - The Foresters opened their season winning three of four matches in a round robin tournament at Kalamazoo College.  The three wins garnered HU a third place finish in the two-day event.

On Friday, the Foresters needed five games to knock off host Kalamazoo College 30-23, 24-30, 29-31, 30-28, 15-13. Brittney Smelser, who was the lone Forester to make the All-Tournament team, paced HU with 16 kills and five blocks while adding 14 digs and three aces. Alyssa Schroeder dished out 41 assists and Stephanie Stearns had 25 digs.

The Foresters followed that up with another five-game win over Tri-State University.  The Thunder had HU on the ropes winning games one and two 30-28 and 33-31 before the Foresters righted the ship and won the last three 32-30, 30-21 and 15-12.  Smelser again led the Foresters at the net with 23 kills and added 16 digs.  Kayley Cervenka had five blocks.  Schroeder tallied 74 assists and six aces and Stearns had 34 digs.

On Saturday, Anderson University spoiled the Foresters' bid for a shot at the tournament title knocking them off in another five-game match 30-20, 34-36, 30-27, 29-31, 12-15.  Smelser had 35 kills to lead HU’s attack.  Cervenka had eight blocks, Schroeder had 59 assists and seven aces and Stearns dug 42 balls.

In their final match of the tournament, HU easily disposed of Lake Forest College winning in three-straight 32-30, 30-19, 30-24.  The Foresters had a more balanced attack with Smelser getting 11 kills, Natalie Villwock 10 and Cervenka nine with another five blocks.  Schroeder led the team with 39 assists.  Stearns contributed 22 digs.
