2008-09 Season Outlook | ||||
|
Coach Dave Schroeder has put together back-to-back 20-win seasons with 24 victories last season and 26 the previous year. There are now high expectations for a three-peat with the return of several key players for the 2008-09 season. Topping the list of returners is First Team All-Conference selection, junior Alyssa Schroeder, who has been the Foresters’ starting setter the previous two years. "Alyssa led the conference in assists per game and was second behind Brittney in aces per game last season," said Coach Schroeder. Second Team All-Conference picks, senior Kayley Cervenka and junior Brittany Smelser, also return. "Kayley was the team’s leading blocker and Brittney was one of the top hitters in the MCC last season," said Coach Schroeder. "We're looking for all three of them to pick up where they left off." Junior Amanda Meyers will also be on the outside. "Amanda had a great year for us last year and we are looking for her to step up a level again this season," stated Coach Schroeder. Two players will split time on the right side. Senior Natalie Villwock will move from the middle to the right side. "Natalie has very good ball control and is very good at hitting around the block," commented Coach Schroeder. "She will be a big plus for us on the right side." Joining her will be sophomore Courtney Berger. "Courtney really showed some great improvement in the spring season," said Coach Schroeder. "She is a very good blocker and with her much improved arm swing, I look for her to score a lot of points for us." Trying to replace three-time MCC Libero of the year Stephanie Stearns will be a tall order. Two returning letterman will get ample time at the Libero position. Senior Laura Bowman has a lot of experience and quickness and sophomore Chelsey Melvin, while not having as much game time, brings a lot to the court in speed and hustle. Coach Schroeder's recruiting class includes some needed size. "We feel we really helped our front row by bringing in two quality middle hitters," said Coach Schroeder. "They add depth to a very strong returning group of players." Freshman Krista Spearman brings a lot of speed and size. "With her jumping ability she is a very good blocker," stated Coach Schroeder. Sophomore Rebecca Brown, a transfer from Purdue, comes from a good program at Oak Hill High School. "Rebecca also brings good size and has very good court awareness." "Our players are very determined and focused on getting back to the top of the conference," said Coach Schroeder. "After suffering a loss in our final conference match due to losing Kayley with a torn ACL, we didn’t match up with as much size and that hurt us going into the tournament. With more depth and size this year, we are setting our goals high. Everyone in our program is totally focused on a conference championship." |
