09.27.08 - The Foresters hosted their own quad tournament and won one of three matches.  HU (11-8)defeated Taylor University Fort Wayne 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 then fell to Marian College 25-10, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 and Bethel College 25-19, 25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 15-13.

Against Taylor Fort Wayne, HU got the win, but Coach Schroeder thought the team could have made a better showing. "We played sluggish the whole match," said Schroeder. "Our passing was not very sharp, which kept us from running the offense we would have liked to run."

Brittney Smelser topped the Foresters with 14 kills and four aces.  Alyssa Schroeder dished out 27 assists and led the team with three blocks.  Amanda Meyers chipped in eight kills and four aces.  Chelsey Melvin had 11 digs to lead the team.

HU then faced MCC foe Marian College and again struggled to get anything going.  Natalie Villwock had a team-high 10 kills.  Schroeder tallied 29 assists. Krista Spearman had four blocks and Smelser led the team with 11 digs.

"We could not get going in any area," said Coach Schroeder.  "Our passing was terrible and our hitters could not seem to find the court.  Marian out-hustled us the whole match."

After dropping the first two games to Bethel College, the Foresters finally began to put things together.  They evened the match at two games apiece, but it was the Pilots who came away with the 15-13 win in the final game to earn the hard-fought victory.

Smelser was HU's catalyst in the match putting down 30 kills against the Pilot defense.  She also led the team with 14 digs and eight aces.  Schroeder had 44 assists and Spearman led the team with five blocks.

"This was a very exciting match," said Coach Schroeder. "After a bit of a slow start, we finally started playing up to our potential.  Brittney was on fire.  Bethel could not stop her.  I also thought our defense did a nice job."

Smelser and Schroeder were both named to the All-tournament team and joined Stephanie Harwood and Marcia Poliquin from Bethel , Bethany Dulle from Marian and Megahn Spillman from Taylor Fort Wayne.
