2003-04 Season Summary

Taylor Ends Foresters' Season
11/12/03

The #-7 seeded Foresters traveled to Taylor University to take on the #2-seeded Trojans in first round Mid-Central Conference tournament action and fell in three straight, losing 27-30, 19-30, 26-30.  HC came out strong in game one and stayed even with Taylor through most of the game, but committed some costly errors late and gave the game away.  The Trojans rolled over HC quickly in game two.  The Foresters took  the early lead in game three, but Taylor's size advantage on the frontline eventually got them back in the game and lifted them to the victory.  Jessica Kendall led the Foresters with 13 kills and four blocks.  Senior Miranda Cook added 9 kills in her final match as a Forester, and Jami Fusselman had a team-high 21 assists.  The women conclude their season with a 10-28 record.

Foresters 0-4 On Weekend
11/7-8/03

Competing in their final regular season tournament, the Foresters struggled with their defense and failed to get anything going offensively all weekend and lost all four matches.  In Friday's first match, HC lost a very close match to Loyola University 28-30, 30-19, 28-30, 30-32.  The Foresters then took on Bethel College and were drilled in three straight, 19-30, 13-30, 28-30.  On Saturday, things didn't get any better for HC as they fell in three to both Tiffin University (18-30, 25-30, 25-30) and Faulkner University (20-30, 24-30, 21-30).  Jessica Kendall led HC with 46 kills and 13 blocks on the weekend.  Renee Biberstine added 31 kills and 56 digs, and Jami Fusselman tallied 115 assists in the tournament.  The Foresters conclude their regular season with a 10-27 record.  HC was seeded seventh for the Mid-Central Conference Tournament and will travel to Upland to take on the  #2-seeded Trojans of Taylor University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Foresters Get MCC Win
11/4/03

The Foresters continued their solid play from the weekend into their final MCC match of the season and knocked off Grace College in three straight 30-17, 30-15, 30-27.  The win was the first in conference play for HC and gave them the seventh seed in next week's conference tournament.  Amy Wilson and Renee Biberstine each had nine kills to lead the Forester attack.  Jessica Kendall added eight kills and a team-high five blocks.  Jami Fusselman led the team with 20 assists and Miranda Cook, the lone senior being honored on Senior Night, recorded five aces on her serve.  "We played very well tonight," said Coach Schroeder.  "Miranda had her jump serve working.  This is a good win to boost us for our conference tournament."  The women move to 10-23 on the season and finish conference play with a 1-6 record.

Foresters 2-2 in Tournament
10/31-11/1/03

The Foresters hosted their own tournament and split four matches to go 2-2 on the weekend.  HC knocked off St. Xavier (30-26, 27-30, 30-18, 30-25) and Goshen (36-34, 30-28, 28-30, 23-30, 15-10), but lost to Aquinas (26-30, 30-22, 24-30, 24-20) and Spring Arbor (32-30, 24-30, 31-29, 29-31, 11-15).  "We played very well this weekend," said Coach Schroeder.  "We finished 2-2, but with a break here or there, we could have easily been 3-1 of possibly 4-0.  We played such long matches, we weren't able to terminate on some of our attacks at the end of the tournament due to being a little tired." Jessica Kendall, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had 55 kills and 26 blocks in the tournament.   Renee Biberstine had 63 kills, 48 digs and 11 blocks, and Jami Fusselman had 167 assists.  The Foresters are now 9-23 on the season.

IWU Defeats Foresters
10/28/03

Inconsistency led to the Foresters' demise as Indiana Wesleyan defeated HC in three straight 30-24, 30-20, 30-25.  "We would play well for 7-8 points and then let IWU run off 9-10 points on us," said Coach Schroeder.  "I didn't feel we had much intensity or much focus in tonight's match."  Jessica Kendall led the Foresters with 11 kills and three blocks.  Amy Wilson added 8 kills and a team-high 11 digs.  Jami Fusselman had 22 assists on the night and Kellie Hanson had two aces on her serve.  The loss drops the women to 7-21 on the season and 0-6 in the MCC.

HC Goes 2-2 at Manchester
10/25/03

The Foresters got off to a great start at the Manchester Invitational, picking up wins over host Manchester College and Cumberland College in Friday's play, but then turned around and lost to the same two teams on Saturday to go 2-2 on the weekend.  In their first match against Manchester, the Foresters took a two games to none lead, but then had to hold off a Spartan rally to take the five-game victory 30-20, 30-27, 25-30, 22-30, 15-11.  HC then downed Cumberland College in three straight 30-28, 30-18, 30-21.  "On Friday, we played very well," said Coach Schroeder.  "Jessica Kendall and Renee Biberstine played very aggressively.  Miranda Cook's jump serve was very good.  We got a lot of points off those three players."  Saturday was a different story.  When the Foresters returned to the court, they met Cumberland College again, but fell 27-30, 16-30, 30-18, 24-30.  Manchester then took HC five games, but topped the Foresters 24-30, 30-27, 29-31, 30-26, 11-15 this time around.  "Saturday we played very poorly," said Schroeder.  "We were always a step slow.  I felt our long matches on Friday affected our play on Saturday.  We played very tired.  This is definitely a tournament we could have won."  For the tournament, Biberstine put down 64 kills and recorded 73 digs to lead the Foresters.  Jessica Kendall added 58 kills and a team-high 20 blocks.  Miranda recorded 22 service aces and Jami Fusselman dished out a team-leading 154 assists.  With the split, the Foresters now stand at 7-20 on the season.

USF Downs Foresters
10/22/03

The Foresters stunned the NAIA 24th-ranked Cougars of St. Francis by winning game one 31-29, but couldn't sustain the momentum and lost the next three 24-30, 18-30, 21-30.  A change in defense gave the Foresters a lift early, but too many passing cost them in the end.  Jessica Kendall had a big night for HC, putting down 18 kills in the match.  Renee Biberstine added 16 kills and a team-high 18 digs.  Miranda Cook recorded 3 aces in the night.  The loss drops the women to 5-18 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

Foresters Remain Winless in MCC
10/15/03

The Foresters traveled to Goshen College looking for their first conference win, but fell in three straight losing  21-30, 21-30, 26-30 to the Maple Leafs.  Jessica Kendall led HC with 15 kills and added 2 blocks.  Amy Wilson had 9 kills and 10 digs in the match, and Jami Fusselman dished out a team-high 28 assists.  With the loss, the Foresters fall to 5-17 on the season and 0-4 in the MCC.

HC Splits at Marian Tri-Match
10/11/03

The Foresters came out strong against Earlham College and put them away in three straight winning 30-9, 30-19, 30-14.  In their second match of the day, HC struggled with its passing game and lost 30-28, 30-19, 30-17 to host Marian College.  Renee Biberstine again led the Foresters with 20 kills on the day and added three blocks.  Other statistical leaders for the Foresters were Jami Fusselman (58 assists), Miranda Cook (9 blocks), Amy Wilson (16 digs), and Mindy Ahl (2 service aces).  With the split, the Foresters move to 5-16 on the season.

Foresters Handle Manchester
10/10/03

The Foresters were able to win the critical points to come away with the three game sweep 33-31, 30-28, 30-16 over Manchester College.  HC jumped out to commanding leads in games one and two, but then had to hold on for the wins.  In game three, the Foresters dominated from start to finish.  Renee Biberstine led HC with 15 kills and added 11 digs.  Jessica Kendall contributed 13 kills and a team-high 4 blocks, while Jami Fusselman led the team with 41 assists.  The win raises the women's record to 4-15 on the season.

Bethel Downs HC
10/7/03

After taking the first game of the match, the Foresters dropped the next three and fell 30-28, 19-30, 25-30, 13-30 to Bethel College.  "We came out very strong," said Coach Schroeder.  "Our defense was much better, but in games 2 and 4, we made a lot of unforced errors and basically beat ourselves."  Freshman Amy Wilson led HC with 10 kills and 16 digs.  Jessica Kendall added nine kills and a team-high five blocks.  Jami Fusselman dished out 24 assists in the match.  The women are now 3-15 on the season and 0-3 in the conference.

Foresters Fall to Marian
10/1/03

The Foresters put up a fight the first two games of the match, but fell in three straight to Marian College, losing 26-30, 26-30, 19-30.  Freshman Renee Biberstine led HC with eight kills and eight digs in the match.  Jessica Kendall added seven kills, four blocks and three aces.  Jami Fusselman had a team-high 22 assists.  With the loss, the women fall to 3-14 on the season and 0-2 in the MCC.

Foresters Sweep TUFW
9/26/03

The Foresters came out firing on all cylinders and earned their first three-game sweep of the season, downing Taylor University Fort Wayne 30-13, 30-15, 30-14.  HC was on top of every aspect of the game and took the Lady Falcons out of the match early.  Upperclassmen, Jessica Kendall and Miranda Cook led the Foresters to the easy victory with their dominant offensive attack.  Kendall recorded a team-high 16 kills, while Cook had an incredible 11 service aces.  "Our good passing made Jami's job a lot easier," said Coach Schroeder.  "She ended up with 29 assists out of 60 attempts, almost 50%, which is very good."  The win puts the women at 3-13 on the season.

Taylor Downs HC
9/23/03

A talented Taylor University squad took advantage of Forester miscues to knock them off in three straight, 17-30, 24-30, 17-30.  "We stayed with them through the first half of each game,"  said Coach Schroeder.  "After that we made too many silly mistakes.  Against a team like Taylor, we can't afford to give points away."  Miranda Cook led the team with 11 kills and 2 blocks.  Jessica Kendall added 9 kills and 2 blocks, and Jami Fusselman had a team-high 24 assists.  With the loss, the women fall to 2-13 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Foresters Drop Three at ONU
9/19-20/03

Lack of consistency cost the Foresters dearly as they dropped all three matches at the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational.  HC began the weekend with a 30-25, 15-30, 37-39, 16-30 loss to the University of St. Francis (IL) and then fell to Illinois Institute of Technology 21-30, 35-33, 19-30, 21-30.  On Saturday, the Foresters came even closer to putting one in the win column, but were outlasted 30-24, 18-30, 30-19, 22-30, 3-15 by Robert Morris College.  "We just simply cannot develop any consistency," said Coach Schroeder.  "We play great for a game and then we play terrible the next.  All three losses were against teams we have the ability to beat."  For the weekend, Jessica Kendall tallied 48 kills and 13 blocks to lead the Foresters.  Miranda Cook added 26 kills, 8 blocks, and 6 aces.  Jami Fusselman led the team with 103 assists and 24 digs.  The Foresters are now 2-12 on the season.

HC 0-2 in Invitational
9/13/03

Poor defense and the inability to put an opponent away cost the Foresters a pair of matches in their own invitational.  In HC's first match against Bethel College, the Foresters weren't making digs and had balls falling between players which led to their 30-26, 30-19, 30-15 loss.  Against Spring Arbor, HC had opportunities to put the Cougars away, but couldn't finish them off.  Spring Arbor was able to avenge their earlier loss to the Foresters with the 30-28, 30-25, 30-28 win.  Miranda Cook led HC with 22 kills, 5 blocks, and 5 serving aces on the day.  Jami Fusselman had a team-high 43 assists.  The Foresters are now 2-9 on the season.

HC Wins Home Opener
9/9/03

Playing in their home opener, the Foresters had to overcome some adversity, but still managed to get the 30-23, 29-31, 30-27, 30-24 win over Taylor University Fort Wayne.   Coach Schroeder was forced to shuffle his lineup to compensate for the loss of Jessica Kendall who was sidelined with a sprained ankle.  The team also struggled with passing and serving throughout the match, but senior Miranda Cook and junior setter Jami Fusselman, helped carry the team to the win.  For the match, Cook led the team with 18 kills, four blocks and 2 service aces.  Fusselman finished with a team-high 35 assists and added nine digs.  With the win, the Foresters improve to 2-7 on the season.

Foresters 0-4 at Madonna Invite
9/5-6/03

HC's youth and inexperience were visible at the Madonna University Invitational as they went 0-4 for the weekend event.  The Foresters didn't pass well and had trouble getting their offense going in their first match against a very talented Olivet Nazarene squad and fell 15-30, 21-30, 12-30.  In their second match, they took Saginaw Valley to four games (13-30, 30-23, 18-30, 17-30), before poor defense cost them the match.  HC's best match of the tournament came Saturday morning against Taylor University.  Although the Foresters fell in three straight (26-30, 15-30, 28-30), their defense was very good.  Taylor's size kept them from getting over the hump.  In their final match of the weekend, HC succumbed to Trinity Christian 20-30, 20-30, 27-30.  Renee Biberstine led the team with 29 kills for the tournament and added 26 digs.  Jessica Kendall contributed a team-high 17 blocks to go along with her 28 kills.  Jami Fusselman dished out 66 assists and Amy Wilson led the team with 28 digs.  The women are now 1-7 on the season.

Foresters 1-3 in Season Opener
8/22-23/03

With seven freshmen on the squad and only four days practice, Coach Schroeder planned to use the weekend tournament at the University of Michigan Dearborn to evaluate the level of talent on his roster.  Although the Foresters went 1-3 over the two days, Schroeder came away with some optimism for the season.  In their first match, HC outlasted Spring Arbor University, winning 30-22, 20-30, 30-15, 27-30, 18-16.  The Foresters then fell 17-30, 14-30, 10-30 to a very talented Doane University squad.  On Saturday, the women succumbed to Bellevue University in three, losing 24-30, 19-30, 28-30, then took Urbana University to five games before dropping their final match 30-28, 30-26, 24-30, 28-30, 9-15.  Schroeder's optimism stemmed from the contributions he got from a variety of players with his three upperclassmen leading the way.  Senior Miranda Cook had a team-high 36 blocks and 17 service aces for the tournament and added 20 kills.  Junior Jessica Kendall led the team with 46 kills on the weekend and had 33 blocks, and junior transfer Jami Fusselman dished out a team-high 82 assists.  Freshman Renee Biberstine contributed a team-leading 32 digs to go along with 36 kills and classmate, Amy Wilson, added 18 kills.
