HC senior Jamie Grogg hit four 3-pointers in a four minute span late
in the second half to spark a comeback which led to the Foresters
68-61 upset of the NAIA 16th-ranked Taylor University
Trojans. The Foresters spread the offense around early to build a
21-12 lead over the first eight minutes of the half. The Trojans
answered with a 13-6 run to cut it to two, but Huntington closed out
the half with an 8-2 burst to take a 35-27 lead at the period. In
the second half, Taylor gradually whittled away the deficit and
eventually took a 46-39 lead with 8:36 left to play. Following a
timeout, the Foresters stepped up their defensive intensity and
Grogg went to work at the offensive end. On HC's next seven
possessions, Grogg dropped in four treys and Amy Berry added one of
her own to help the Foresters get back in the game. Following
Grogg's fourth three, Jessica Ramey knocked down two charity tosses
to give HC a 56-55 lead they would never lose. Two free throws from
Taylor’s Liz Plass brought the Trojans back within one at 62-61 with
just over a minute remaining. Huntington brought the ball up and
Grogg found Berry on the left block, who banked in a five footer to
put the Foresters up 64-61 with :45 showing on the clock. Plass
missed a jumper at the other end and Ramey, who came up with the
defensive rebound, was immediately fouled. Ramey again sank both
free throws and Grogg added two more to seal the win. Grogg, who
went 7-10 from downtown, finished with a game-high 23 points.
Betsey Bean added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Ramey
and Janna Knisely each added 12 points. Plass led Taylor with 18
points.
With the win, the women improve to 9-13 on the season and 4-7 in the
MCC.
