- The NAIA Division II 5th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University
Wildcats (8-2) survived HC’s upset bid with a 76-63 double overtime win in
their Mid-Central Conference opener. The Foresters were down 12 midway
through the first half, but rallied to within six at the break. To
start the second half, the Foresters committed four consecutive turnovers to
allow the Wildcats to take a 28-18 lead. Following a Huntington
timeout, the Foresters clawed their way back to take a 38-37 lead with just
over eight minutes to play. The rest of regulation was a seesaw affair.
Janna Knisely’s jumper from the left elbow with eight seconds to play
brought Huntington even at 53-53 and Jennie Martin’s 3-point attempt at the
buzzer dropped short for the Wildcats. In the first overtime,
Huntington took an early four-point lead as a result of back-to-back
turnovers by the Wildcats and had an opportunity to put the game out of reach
with HC up 59-57 and Betsey Bean heading to the charity stripe with :23 left
to play. Bean missed the front end of the one-and-one and IWU’s
Martin dribbled the length of the floor and hit a layup to tie it at 59-59
with 16 seconds left. Jessica Ramey tried to return the favor, but her
attempt was off the mark and Bean’s try after rebounding Ramey’s miss
bounced off the rim sending the game to a second extra period. With
both of Huntington’s starting forwards having fouled out, the Foresters
were forced to help more inside in the second overtime, which opened up the
perimeter for IWU. The Wildcats responded by knocking down three treys
that finally put the Foresters away. Indiana Wesleyan’s Liz
Howerth took game-high honors with her 26 points and nine rebounds.
Jennie Martin added 18 and Abby Wilson had 12 for the Wildcats. Ramey,
playing in her first full game since a pre-season injury sidelined her,
scored 23 to lead the Foresters. Jamie Grogg had 15 and Bean added 10.
The loss drops the
women to 3-5 on the season.
