Defense wins games and the Foresters
proved it again winning another low-scoring affair 56-46 over the
Cougars of Spring Arbor University. Spring Arbor hit four of its
first five shots to take an early 8-6 lead three minutes in, but the
Foresters buckled down defensively and out-scored the Cougars 13-2
over the next six minutes to open up a 19-10 margin. The two teams
traded baskets the rest of the half and Huntington owned a 31-20
lead at the break. Spring Arbor put an 11-4 run on the Foresters to
start the second half, but a three from Jessica Ramey and a layup
from Amy Berry swayed the momentum back in Huntington’s favor. A
jumper by Ramey following three consecutive offensive rebounds by
the Foresters gave Huntington its largest lead of the game at 46-33
midway through the half. Spring Arbor cut it to eight on a steal
and layup by April Bennett with 5:26 on the clock, but a baseline
jumper from Betsey Bean pushed the Foresters’ lead back to 52-42, an
advantage they held the rest of the way. Berry and Ramey combined
for 28 points for Huntington. Berry dropped in 18 while Ramey
scored 16 and added seven assists. Kristen Van Valin led the
Cougars with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Jenna Sharp added 10
points. The women move to 12-14 on the year and are 7-8 in the MCC
with one game remaining on the regular season schedule.
