- The
Foresters took a break from the MCC schedule to take on the Urbana
University Blue Knights and dropped another close one 67-66. HU
took an early five-point lead on a Jessica Ramey trey, but the Blue
Knights kept within striking distance by pounding the ball inside
against the smaller Forester lineup. HU took its largest lead of
the game at 26-17 on another three from Kendra Stahl with 5:30 left
in the half, but foul trouble took the Foresters out of their
offensive rhythm late in the period. Urbana out-scored HU 14-3 over
the final five minutes of the half to take a 31-29 lead at the
break.
The second half was
marked by six lead changes and five ties as neither team could put
together a substantial run. A jumper by LaTish Hamilton put the Blue
Knights up 58-53 with
7:15 remaining, but another 3-pointer from Ramey and two free
throws from Betsey Bean tied it up at 58 a minute later. After
trading baskets for several minutes,
Urbana’s Brittany
Runner converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Blue
Knights’ a 65-62 lead with 1:40 left. Amy Berry then scored a layup
on consecutive possessions for HU to reclaim the lead for the
Foresters at 66-65 with 48 seconds to play. At the other end, the
Knights got the ball inside to Runner, who missed a layup, and Bean
came up with the big rebound with :32 on the clock. The Foresters
ran several seconds off the clock before Urbana was whistled for a
foul, but the Blue Knights needed one more foul to put HU in the
bonus. Sam Riley fouled HU’s Jessica Ramey with nine seconds left.
Ramey missed the front end of the one-and-one and Mary Jo
Weisenbarger grabbed the rebound. She hit Riley on the run who
dribbled the length of the floor and hit a layup over Bean with
three seconds left. Ramey’s long 3-point attempt at the buzzer was
off the mark.
Urbana’s
Runner took game-high honors with 19 points and nine boards in the
game. Riley finished with 17 points. Four Foresters reached double
figures with Berry leading the team with 14 points and seven
rebounds. Janna Knisely had 13 points and Bean and Ramey each added
10. The loss drops the women to 10-9 on the season.
