- Marian College's stifling defense kept the Foresters' offense
in check for much of the game and led to the Knights' 61-53 victory.
Early in the contest, HU struggled to get a good look at the basket
as Marian defenders were glued to the Foresters. A Jessica
Ramey trey was all of HU's offense for the first six minutes of
play, allowing the Knights to jump out to a 16-3 advantage.
The Foresters then settled down and began to chip away at Marian's
lead. HU outscored the Knights 16-9 over the next ten minutes
to pull within six at 25-19 with 5:34 to go in the half.
Marian finished the period with an 8-4 run to take a 33-23 lead at
the break.
The Knights' defense
again dominated play early in the second half as they forced HU into
several turnovers. A 3-point field goal by Marian's Katie Linn
at the 14:37 mark gave the Knights their largest lead of the game at
44-27. Marian still owned a 48-32 lead at the midpoint of the
half when the Foresters finally put together a few good offensive
possessions. Following a field goal by Marian's Michelle
Meneguzzi, which put the Knights' up 53-40 at the 5:44 mark, the
Foresters put together one last run. Over the next four
minutes, HU scored nine points while holding the Knights scoreless
to pull within 53-49 with 1:08 on the clock. On Marian's next
possession, Ramey went for a steal, but was called for a foul,
sending Linn to the line. She broke the Knights' scoring
drought with the two charity tosses. Ramey missed her jumper
at the other end and Meneguzzi put it out of reach with a short
jumper in the paint. Kassie Koselke put on the finishes
touches for Marian with four consecutive free throws in the waning
seconds.
Ramey topped all
scorers in the game with her 21 points. Bean added a
double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Meneguzzi and Linn each
scored 10 to lead the Knights. With the loss, the women fall
to 7-8 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.
