Playing in the Martin Group Judson Tournament, the Foresters (3-3)
rebounded after a discouraging loss on Friday to beat the host
Judson College Eagles 71-63 in the consolation game. Judson used
its quickness to force HU into 16 first half turnovers, but some hot
shooting, 12-24 from the field and 8-9 from the line, kept the
Foresters within one at 35-34 at intermission.
The
second half was a seesaw affair with five ties and six lead changes
through the first ten minutes. A jumper by HU’s Amy Berry broke a
52-52 tie and sparked an 8-0 run to give the Foresters some
breathing room. The Eagles got back within four at 62-58 with 4:25
to play, but a layup by
Berry and a trey by
Betsey Bean, her fourth of the game, pushed HU’s advantage to nine
at 67-58 at the 2:50 mark. The Foresters then hit four of six
charity tosses down the stretch to seal the win.
Berry,
the lone Forester to make the All-Tournament team, paced
Huntington with 21
points and added six rebounds. Bean hit five of eight field goals,
including 4-4 from behind the arc for 16 points and Jessica Ramey
finished with 14 points and six assists. Janna Knisely grabbed a
game-high 10 rebounds to go along with her six points and three
assists. Judson’s Kim Watson took game-high honors with 24 points
and she added a team-high nine boards in the contest.
In
Friday evening’s game,
Huntington took on a feisty
Eastern
Oregon
University
squad and fell 64-44. The Foresters were still within striking
distance down 32-26 at the half, but managed just 18 points in the
second period on 25% shooting. The Mountaineers’ Heidi Horobiowski
scored seven of her game-high 22 points in a 9-0 EOU run to give the
Mountaineers a commanding 45-30 lead early in the second half. HU
trimmed the deficit to 10 at 47-37 on two free throws from Janna
Knisely, but the Mountaineers answered with a 15-2 spurt over the
next seven minutes to give them their largest lead of the game at
62-39 with 4:36 to play. The Foresters could get no closer than the
final margin.
Amy
Berry was the lone Forester to reach double digits in the game with
12 and she added nine rebounds. Christie Weaver and Liz Brice
joined Horobiowski in doubles figures for EOU with 13 and 10 points
respectively. The Mountaineers met
Missouri
Baptist
University
in Saturday’s championship game and knocked off the NAIA Division I
Spartans 64-51.
