- The Foresters (7-7) came all the way back from a 20-point
second-half deficit only to have the Ohio Dominican Panthers (10-4)
snatch the game back 89-88 at the buzzer.
Ohio Dominican used
relentless full court pressure and an up-tempo style of play to
dominate play in the first half. The Panthers forced HU into
an uncharacteristic 14 turnovers in the first half and held them to
41% shooting while knocking down 53% of their field goal attempts.
As the half-time buzzer sounded, the Foresters limped to the locker
room down 45-30.
Things didn't go much better early in the second half as Ohio
Dominican pushed its lead to as many as 20 five minutes into the
period. But the Panthers style of play
soon began to catch up with them as
they put HU in the double bonus with 14 minutes left in the game.
The Foresters began to solve the full court pressure more routinely
and as they looked to attack the basket, they were rewarded with
numerous free throws. HU continued to chipped away at the
deficit and pulled within three at 85-82 when Janna Knisely hit two
from the line with just under two minutes to play.
Kayla Waller put
back an offensive rebound on the Panthers' next possession to push
the lead back to five at 87-82. The two teams traded turnovers
and Betsey Bean was fouled on a drive with 1:11 to go. Bean
hit the second of two tosses to make it 87-83. Tristin Miracle
then misread her teammates' backdoor cut and threw the ball out of
bounds. On HU next possession, Tiffany Malfait found Knisely
on the wing for a jumper to make it 87-85 with 30 seconds to play.
The Panthers tried to run some clock, but Ramey stole the ball from
Miracle. She drove the length of the floor, hit the layup and
was fouled with 10.1 second showing on the clock. Ramey hit
the clutch free throw to give HU an 88-87 lead, but Megan Niese
spoiled the amazing comeback.
Maggie Andrews
brought the ball up the court and passed it to Niese on the right
wing. She couldn't get a shot off, so she put the ball on the
floor and got by her defender on the baseline. She rolled in
the layup with .4 seconds left. The Foresters' full court pass
was stolen as the buzzer sounded.
Ramey took game-high
honors with 29 points on 10-18 shooting, including 2-3 from behind
the arc and 7-8 at the line. Knisely finished with 25 points
on 8-12 shooting including 8-10 from the charity stripe.
Betsey Bean added 18 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Both Ramey and Knisely were named to the All-Tournament team. Andrea Carlberg led the Panthers with 18 off the bench. Krissy
Haines added 15 points and Cassidy Wertman finished with 14.
