12.09.05 - Brittney Smelser, a dual-sport athlete at Huntington North High School, has signed a Letter of Intent to continue both her volleyball and basketball careers at Huntington University next fall.  This past fall, Smelser completed her fourth season as a varsity volleyball player for the Lady Vikings with her selection to Indiana’s North All-Star team.

During her four years of volleyball at Huntington North, she earned First Team All-Conference honors three times and was Honorable Mention All-Conference as a freshman.  Smelser left her mark on the volleyball program finishing her stellar career holding five school records.  She set the mark for most kills in a single season with 337 during her junior campaign and will graduate having recorded the most kills in a career with 1,128, which is over 500 kills more than the second place holder.   She also holds the record for most aces in a single season (89) and in a career (214), and she has the top spot in digs in a career with 956.

On the basketball court, Smelser has played in an outstanding Lady Viking program that has averaged 20 wins the last three seasons.  This year, the 5’10 senior has moved into a starting role and has hit the ground running.  Through eight games, Smelser is averaging 12 points per game on 46% shooting, including 41% from behind the arc, and she has been clutch at the line knocking down 91% of her free throws early in the season.

“We are excited to have Brittney join our program”, said Huntington University basketball coach, Lori Culler.  “Since she just moved into a starting role this season, not many college programs are familiar with her game at this point, so we feel very fortunate to get an early commitment from her.  She has great range, but can also put the ball on the floor, and she is versatile enough to play a couple different positions.  She’s a diamond in the rough who looks to have a bright future at the next level.
