After
building a 15-point first half advantage, the Foresters (11-6, 3-4)
were able to maintain a double digit lead throughout the second half
to post the 70-56 win over Goshen College (5-16, 0-7).
The Leafs took an
early 4-0 lead to open the game, but an Amy Berry trey at the 15:26
mark erased HU's deficit giving the Foresters a 7-6 lead. HU then
added seven more unanswered points over the next minute to break
open the game. Goshen continued to hang around and pulled within
six at 25-19 on a Katie Souers' layup with five minutes remaining in
the half. The Foresters responded by picking up their defensive
intensity and held the Leafs scoreless down the stretch. HU took
advantage of Goshen's drought and ran off nine consecutive points to
take a 34-19 lead to the locker room.
In the second half,
the Foresters immediately pushed the lead to 19 with back-to-back
layups from Kendra Stahl and Berry. The Leafs made a couple of runs
to get as close as 12 at the 12:37 mark and 10 with 1:36 to play,
but each time, HU was able to respond to keep Goshen in check.
Berry topped four
Foresters in double figures with a game-high 21 points and she added
seven rebounds. Erica Yost added 11 points and six assists off the
bench while Stahl and Courtney Beerbower both finished with 10
points. Lauren Davenport chipped in eight points, nine assists and
five steals. Chloe VanDenBrink led Goshen with 15 points and
Krystal Duensing added 10.
The Leafs won the
battle of the boards 40-28, but HU committed just seven turnovers to
21 for Goshen.
