- A chilly second half shooting performance
allowed Marian College to rally from an 11-point second half deficit
to down the Foresters 89-80. The Knights' comeback was also
bolstered by shooting 69% in the second half which was in stark
contrast to HU's 36% effort.
The Foresters opened up a 12-2 lead
to start the game and led by as many as 16 at 30-14 with just under
seven minutes to play in the half. Marian pulled within six
with 42 seconds left, but a Kendra Stahl lay-up put HU up 40-32 at
intermission.
Early in the second half, the
Foresters pushed the lead back to 11 at 50-39, but then a lid was
put on the basket. HU went without a field goal for five
minutes allowing the Knights to tie things up at 55. Following
a timeout, the Foresters changed defenses and were able to string
together seven unanswered points to jump back in front at 62-55
midway through the half. Marian quickly swung the momentum back in
its favor with back-to-back threes and made it an 8-0 run on a
Jessica Carr lay-up to take a 63-62 lead a minute later.
The two teams traded baskets over
the next two minutes until a controversial traveling call denied
what looked to be a potential three-point play for HU at the 4:45
mark. From there the Knights put a 12-4 run on the Foresters
to increase their advantage to 84-72 with two minutes left. HU
got back within seven twice down the stretch, but could get no
closer.
Courtney Beerbower led the
Foresters with her fifth double-double of the season. She
finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Joining
Beerbower in double figures was Lauren Davenport with 16, Brittney
Bateman with 12 and Kendra Stahl with 10. Marian's Carr topped
all scorers in the game with 22. Kristin Houck added 17, and
Theresa Fairbrother and Anjellica Rospond chipped in 16 and 10
respectively off the bench.
