The
Foresters (4-1) over came an eight-point half-time deficit and
escaped with a 62-59 win on the road over Judson University.
The
Eagles played a very scrappy defense applying pressure full court
which kept HU’s offense from finding much rhythm in the first half.
The Foresters struggled from the field shooting just 37.9% and only
made five trips to the free throw line. Down by as many as 12 at
32-20 with 2:21 to play in the half, HU was able to gain a little
momentum by getting back within single digits at 33-25 by the
break.
After
re-grouping in the locker room, the Foresters emerged and
immediately erased the deficit with some hot shooting. HU scored
the first seven points of the half and took the lead at 36-35 on a
Jenna Donaldson lay-up at the 15:35 mark. The score remained close
the rest of the half with neither team able to build more than a
five-point cushion.
With
2:23 to play, Donaldson put the Foresters up 61-59 with a driving
lay-up along the left baseline. After trading turnovers, Judson had
several opportunities to knot the score, but couldn’t convert.
Kendra Stahl finally came up with the critical rebound and was
fouled with 6.4 seconds left on the clock. She hit the first, but
missed the second. HU had two fouls to give and used them as the
Eagles tried to bring the ball up the floor. With 2.4 ticks left,
Judson inbounded the ball to Kristin Johns. She took a couple
dribbles and launched a prayer that bounced off the back of the rim
to give the Foresters the hard-fought victory.
HU’s
Courtney Beerbower took game-high honors with 20 points and eight
rebounds. Brittney Bateman finished with seven points and nine
assists for the Foresters. Marissa Marshall led Judson with 12
points and Devonaye Henderson added 10 off the bench. The Foresters
out-rebounded Judson 32-29 and had 18 turnovers to 19 for the
Eagles.
