The Huntington
University Foresters (7-2, 1-0) turned a four-point lead into a
16-point cushion with a late 12-0 run to put away Marian College
(7-1, 0-1) and win their Mid-Central Conference opener 73-57.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively with Huntington
clinging to an 11-10 lead midway through the first period. The
Foresters slowly built a seven-point lead at 21-14 over a six minute
span, but headed to the locker room up just four at 25-21.
The game remained close through the first ten minutes of the second
half, when Huntington finally put together a run to take a 10-point
lead at the 7:25 mark. The Knights continued to battle and scored
six consecutive points to cut it to 55-51 less than a minute later.
The Foresters answered with back-to-back three-point plays from
Courtney Beerbower and Brittney Bateman to regain the double-digit
margin. Huntington’s defense continued to get stops and Erica Yost,
Beerbower and Lauren Davenport each hit a lay-up to push the
Foresters’ lead to 67-51 with 1:58 to go. Huntington then hit 6 of
8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Beerbower led all scorers in the game with 27 points including a
13-14 performance at the charity stripe and she made it a
double-double night with a game-high 12 rebounds. Joining Beerbower
in double figures for the Foresters was Davenport with 17 points and
Yost with 10. Kristin Houck topped the Knights with 17 points.
After a shooting a dismal 26.9% from the field in the first half,
the Foresters hit 14 of 28 shots in the second for 50.0% and
finished at 38.9% for the game. Marian was 20-46 from the field for
43.59%. Huntington committed 19 turnovers in the game, but forced
the Knights into 29 miscues.
