Despite a solid defensive effort, the NAIA 8th-ranked Foresters
could not overcome an icy cold shooting performance and fell 45-42
to Goshen College. HU went 16 for 59 from the field for 27.1%
and was just 1-12 from behind the arc.
Offense was hard to come
by for both teams throughout the game, but the Foresters were able
to build a 9-2 lead nine minutes into the contest. With HU
struggling to find the bottom of the net, the Leafs were able to
chip away at their deficit and evened the score at 11-11 with six
minutes to go in the half. The two teams finished the period
in a stalemate at 18-18.
Defense was still the
dominant force as the second half began with both teams scoring just
six points through six minutes of play. The Foresters then
appeared to gain the upper hand with a 10-2 run that put them up
34-26 at the 8:24 mark. They were still up 39-32 with 4:38 to
play, but Goshen stole the momentum with two baskets from Cassie
Greives and a long three from Heather Hahn to knot the score at
40-40 with 1:23 to go.
An HU turnover gave the
ball back to the Leafs and Greives was fouled on the play. She hit
the second of two free throws to give Goshen a 41-40 lead. On
their next possession, the Foresters had three opportunities to
answer back with the third ending as a controversial charging foul
called on HU. With 27 seconds to play, the Foresters were
forced to foul and Krystal Duensing hit a pair to give the Leafs a
43-40 advantage. Another HU turnover again gave the ball back
to Goshen and Duensing hit one of two at the line. Jenna
Donaldson got the Foresters back within two on a couple of free
throws at 44-42 with three seconds to play. HU then sent
Rachel Allen to the stripe where she made one of two, but she came
up with her own rebound on the miss to seal the victory.
Donaldson, who needed
just five points in the game to eclipse the 1000-point mark for her
career, led all scorers in the game with 18 points. Sarah
Miller joined her in double figures with 10. Greives paced the
Leafs with 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds and Hahn
finished with 14.
