- On an absurdly cold night, the oddities of the evening didn't
stop with the weather. During the Foresters game against
Spring Arbor University, the electricity went off during halftime
forcing a delay to the start of the second half. With only
about a third of the lights regenerating, the game eventually
continued on in the dimly lit gymnasium, only to have a total loss
of power with 57.6 seconds remaining in the contest. When the
lights went out with HU leading 66-54 and at the line ready to shoot
two free throws, the Cougars conceded the game.
The Foresters got
off to a slow start offensively, appearing to be a little tentative
after a poor shooting performance in their previous contest.
Spring Arbor took advantage and jumped out to a 6-1 lead. A
Jenna Donaldson jumper gave HU a needed boost and ignited a 9-0 run
to put the Foresters in front 10-6 five minutes into the game.
The Cougars kept
within a point or two over the next ten minutes until Lauren
Davenport got a steal and a layup to put HU up seven with just under
three minutes left in the half. Spring Arbor scored the next
four points, but a driving layup at the buzzer by Davenport gave the
Foresters a 29-23 advantage at the break.
Then came the first
power outage. When play resumed under brown-out conditions,
the Cougars stormed back and knotted the score at 35-35 at the 15:23
mark. Following a timeout, Sarah Miller scored to put HU back
in front for good and opened a 12-2 run that put the Foresters up
double digits at 47-37 midway through the half. The Cougars
got back within six on three occasions over the next five minutes,
but each time HU had an answer. Davenport put the Foresters up
12 with a free throw at the 1:14 mark and when Spring Arbor missed
on its next possession, Courtney Beerbower was intentionally fouled
with 57.6 seconds left on the clock. As she was settling in at
the line, the power went out for the second time bringing the game
to the unusual abrupt ending.
HU's Davenport
topped all scorers in the contest with 18 points and six assists.
Donaldson finished with 13, Beerbower had 12 and Miller added 10.
Jen Moor paced the Cougars with 15 points. She was joined in
double figures by Lyndsey Norman with 12 and Kara Buehrer with 11.
Despite the poor
lighting in the second half, the Foresters blistered the nets
hitting 13 of 18 shot attempts for 72.2% and finished the game at
51.1%. Spring Arbor went 16 for 39 for the game for 41%.
