- In a
NAIA Division II Top 25 matchup, it was the 6th-ranked Foresters
that put away the 15th-ranked Wildcats of Indiana
Wesleyan 63-49. The win moves HU to 11-3 on the season and 2-1 in
the MCC, while the Wildcats fall to 12-5 overall and 1-2 in the
conference.
Following an early 2-2 tie, Sarah Miller hit a
driving layup to give the Foresters a 4-2 lead they would never
relinquish. HU expanded the margin to five seven minutes into the
contest, and then pushed it to nine on a traditional 3-point play by
Jenna Donaldson at the 7:16 mark. The Wildcats cut it to five at
19-14 with 4:39 left in the half, but after a 30-second timeout to
regroup, the Foresters ran off 10 consecutive points to drive the
lead to double digits and ended the half up 32-16.
HU added to its advantage early in the second half
extending its lead to as many as 23 at 45-22 with 11:48 to go in the
game. The Wildcats fought back to within 15 at 53-38, but a layup
by Lauren Davenport and five straight points from Miller ended the
rally and put the Foresters back up 22 with 3:53 to play. A couple
treys down the stretch by IWU’s Kayla Thompson cut HU’s final margin
of victory to 14.
Davenport topped all scorers in the game with 18
points and four assists for the Foresters. Miller added 17 points
and Courtney Beerbower finished with a double-double with 10 points
and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Wildcats were paced by Elaine
Hessel with 14 points and Thompson chipped in 10 points and six
assists.
The Foresters went 22-52 from the field for 42.3%
while IWU was 20-49 for 40.8%. HU out-rebounded the Wildcats 36-29.
