- After
being tied at halftime, the Huntington University Foresters’ defense
limited Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) to just 16 second half
points to win 59-43 and remain perfect on the season at 8-0.
The two teams traded baskets early, but it was
Huntington that found some breathing room first with a 10-0 run that
put the Foresters up 16-6 midway through the half. Huntington still
held a nine-point advantage at 25-16 with seven minutes left in the
half, but could only manage two points down the stretch. The Titans
slowly battled their way back into the game and evened the score at
27 as they headed to the locker room.
The defense continued to be in control at both ends
of the floor as the second half began. The Foresters moved out to a
35-30 lead five minutes into the period, but IUSB scored the next
four to pull within one. A 12-2 spurt over a seven minute span
finally gave Huntington a double digit advantage at 47-36 with 7:39
to play. On their next possession, the Titans got back within
single digits on a layup by Betsy Grogan, but it was as close as
they would get. A Sarah Miller jumper from the elbow and a putback
by Courtney Beerbower pushed the Foresters’ margin back to 13 at the
5:14 mark and IUSB could get know closer.
Huntington’s Beerbower topped all scorers in the game
with 19 points. She also added a game-high nine rebounds. Miller
joined her in double figures with 12 points. Brooke Daugherty led
IUSB with 12 points and Becca Hoefler chipped in 10 points off the
bench.
Huntington shot
47.2% from the field hitting 25 of 53 shots while the Titans were
18-47 for 38.3%. The Foresters also out-rebounded IUSB 35-25.
