- After a two-week layoff, the NAIA 6th-ranked Foresters looked
out of sync and never really got on track as they were upset by
Malone University 68-66 on a 15-foot buzzer beater by Amy Kittle.
The Pioneers jumped
out to a 16-8 lead seven minutes into the contest. Over the
next six minutes, HU out-scored Malone 10-1 to take its first lead
of the game at 18-17 with 6:17 to play in the half. The two
teams then traded baskets down the stretch and headed to the locker
rooms with the score knotted at 25-25.
The Foresters scored
the first four points to open the second half, but then committed
four turnovers on their next five possessions allowing Malone to
push back in front 33-29. HU evened things up again at 38
midway through the period.
The two teams traded
baskets and the lead a few times over the next five minutes until
the Pioneers built a six-point advantage on a trey from Ashley
Speicher at 59-53 the 5:05 mark. Again HU battled back
and finally tied the score at 66-66 on a three from Ryleigh Carr
with 42 seconds to play.
The Foresters got a
stop at the defensive end and with 27 seconds left, could play for
the last shot. HU worked the clock down to eight seconds and
Malone rebounded Carr's miss. Allyson Wilson pushed the ball
up the court and found Kittle open on the right baseline.
Kittle's jumper was nothing but net as the buzzer sounded.
Malone's Speicher
took game-high honors with 24 points in the game and Wilson finished
with 17. The Foresters put five players in double figures with
Lauren Davenport topping the list with 14. Brita Kuiper
contributed 13 off the bench. Courtney Beerbower added a
double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Carr
finished with 11 in her first game back after early season surgery
and Jenna Donaldson had 10.
