- The
NAIA Division II 6th-ranked Foresters came out looking tentative
after suffering their first loss of the season on Wednesday, but
they put together a solid second half to get back in the win column
with a 74-63 victory over Grace College. The win is HU's first
in conference play and moves them to 9-1 on the season.
Over the first 12 minutes of the
game, the score was tight with the Foresters owning a small lead
most of the way. Following a Kayla Skaggs jumper that brought
the Lancers within 16-14 at the 8:06 mark, HU put together a 7-0 run
to take its largest lead of the period at 23-14. From there,
the Foresters' got very tentative at the offensive end. HU went
seven minutes without a field goal until Kelsey Green finally ended
the drought with a layup at the 1:09 mark. The dry spell allowed
Grace to take a 30-29 edge at the break.
The Foresters emerged from the
locker room and immediately got back to their aggressive style of
play. They out-scored the Lancers 16-7 over the first five and
a half minutes of play to take a 45-37 lead and then shortly after
the midpoint of the period, orchestrated another 10-1 run to push
their advantage to 13 at 58-45. Grace cut the deficit to seven
with 2:17 to play, but six unanswered Forester points put the game
out of reach.
Courtney Beerbower topped four HU
players in double figures with a season-high 20 points. Lauren
Davenport and Sarah Miller both added 14 and Jenna Donaldson
finished with 12. Green took game-high honors with 11 rebounds
off the bench for the Foresters. Kiera Gray led Grace with 20
points on 9-14 shooting.
After shooting just 33% in the
first half, HU lit it up in the second shooting 63% and finished at
51% (23-45) for the game. The Lancers went 23-54 for 43%.
