After leading by as many as 16 in the first half, the Foresters
couldn't hold off a feisty Spring Arbor squad and were upset 63-62.
Midway through the first
period, HU used a stingy defense to build a double-digit lead at
18-7. The Foresters increased their advantage to 28-12 at the
4:20 mark on a field goal from Courtney Beerbower, but the momentum
began to switch down the stretch. The Cougars knocked down
three treys in two minutes and whittled HU's lead to just 35-25 at
the break.
For the first 12 minutes
of the second half, the two teams traded baskets with the Foresters
still up 54-44 with 7:46 to play. From there, HU went 1-7 from
the field and committed three turnovers allowing Spring Arbor to
take its first lead of the game at 57-56 on two charity tosses by
Courtney Smith. Lauren Davenport knotted the score at 60 by
hitting a pair at the line, but Spring Arbor's Kara Buehrer returned
the favor on the Cougars' next possession.
HU missed a layup at the
1:14 mark that would have evened the score and then fouled Lindsey
Norman on an inbounds play at the other end. Norman hit one of
two to put the Cougars up 63-60. Jenna Donaldson went to the
line on the Foresters' next possession after getting fouled while
rebounding a Brittney Bateman miss. She sank both and cut it
to 63-62 with 20 seconds to play. HU forced a turnover as
Spring Arbor tried to get the ball up the court and had two chances
to take the lead in the final eight seconds, but couldn't connect.
Davenport led all
scorers in the contest with 17 points for the Foresters.
Beerbower finished with 13 and Donaldson had 11. Jen Moor
topped five Cougars in double figures with 16 points. Norman,
Smith, Buehrer and Kristen Miller each added 10.
