Although the Foresters sputtered out of the gate against NAIA
Division II 18th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University, five minutes
into the contest they began to hit on all cylinders and eventually
cruised to the 79-57 victory over the Wildcats.
IWU's Kayla Thompson
drained a three at the 15:33 mark to give the Wildcats an early 9-4
lead, but HU ran off the next 10 points to claim the lead for good
at 14-9. Another Thompson trey cut it to two, but again the
Foresters responded with a 10-0 spurt and headed to the break up 12
at 34-22.
LeAnn Douglas scored the
first field goal of the second half to pull IWU within 10, but it
was as close as they would get. A 3-pointer by Sarah Miller at
the 12:02 mark gave HU a 17-point advantage and two charity tosses
as a result of a technical foul called on the Wildcat coach gave the
Foresters their largest lead of the game at 77-51 with 1:30
remaining.
HU put five players in
double figures in the winning effort with Miller topping all the
list with 20. Jenna Donaldson had 18 points. Kelsey
Green chipped in 15 points off the bench and also grabbed a
game-high eight rebounds. Courtney Beerbower finished with 12 points
and seven boards and Lauren Davenport added 10 points and three
assists. Thompson paced IWU with 14 points. Douglas
finished with 13 and Elaine Hessel had 12.
The Foresters shot 51.1%
(24-47) for the game while holding IWU to 37.3% (19-51). HU
also went 27-32 from the line for 84.4% and out-rebounded the
Wildcats 37-24.
