The game was a battle for first place in the MCC standings between
the NAIA 10th-ranked Foresters and 16th-ranked Bethel College.
A dismal shooting performance spelled doom for HU and led to a
disappointing 69-55 loss. Bethel's victory puts the Pilots a
half game ahead of the Foresters in the MCC standings.
HU got off to a rocky
start coming up empty on their first six possessions with two
turnovers and four missed shots. The Pilots took advantage and
opened up a 13-4 lead four minutes into the contest. The
Foresters then held Bethel scoreless for seven minutes and slowly
climbed back in the game at 13-12 with 8:48 to go in the half.
Over the next two
minutes, the Pilots responded with a 13-0 run that turned the tide
in Bethel's favor for good. The two teams traded baskets over
the final 6:03 and the Pilots took a 34-21 advantage to the break.
The Foresters returned
to the floor looking to make an early run to get back in the game,
but again the shots would not fall for HU. Bethel capitalized
again and pushed the lead to 20 at 45-25 with 14:04 to play.
The Foresters got back within 10 on three occasions with the last
coming at the 4:44 mark, but they could get no closer down the
stretch.
Lauren Davenport paced
HU with 15 points and Jenna Donaldson added 12. Heather
Seyfred and Mandy Yoder each had 22 to lead the Pilots and Amber
Peters chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 19 rebounds.
The Foresters were 17-62
form the field for 27% while Betel went 18-45 for 40%. The
Pilots won the battle of the boards 45-36.
