Senior Lauren Davenport helped the Foresters sidestep the Jamestown
(N.D.) Jimmies 64-54 in first round action at the NAIA Division II
Women’s National Basketball Tournament with her game-high 19 points
and five steals. Heading into the contest, Davenport needed
just six points to score the 1000th point of her career. In
typical Davenport fashion, she stole the ball from Jamestown's
Dakota Anderson and scored an uncontested layup at the 10:26 mark f
the first half to reach the milestone.
The Foresters, who were making their first appearance since the 1994
tournament, led 35-27 at halftime and never allowed Jamestown closer
than six in the second half. Jamestown’s last charge came with 3:53
left in the game but the Mid-Central College Tournament Champions
outscored Jamestown 7-3 in the closing minutes for their 25th
win of the season.
Huntington converted 22-58 field goals for 38% while Jamestown was
19-60 from the floor for 32%. Jamestown held a 48-32 rebounding
edge but hurt their cause with 18 turnovers compared to just 10
miscues for the Foresters.
Joining Davenport in double figures for Huntington was Jenna
Donaldson with 16 points and six rebounds and Sarah Miller with 11.
Heidi Fiechtner led the Jimmies with 11 points and eight rebounds
and Ali Edwards chipped in 10 points.
Huntington advances in tournament play to face Davenport University
(Mich.) on Friday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m. CST. Davenport
defeated Indiana University Southeast 88-62 in its opening game.
