-It was a special day at the
Merillat Complex as the Foresters' hosted their second annual
Pink Out event. Not only did
the NAIA 18th-ranked Foresters (19-7, 10-4) down the visiting Spring
Arbor Cougars (4-22, 2-13) 77-57, more importantly they raised a
total of $2,000 to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast
Cancer. As part of the Pink Out festivities, thirty-six breast
cancer survivors were honored during a half-time ceremony with each
receiving a coin purse from the Vera Bradley Foundation.
Playing before the
sea of pink, the Foresters jumped out to a 10-2 quick lead with just
over three minutes into the contest. HU continued to build on their
lead as Sarah Miller's long bomb as the shot clock was winding down
gave the Foresters their largest lead of the half, 20-6, at the
11:44 mark. The Cougars then came alive as the Foresters went
cold. Spring Arbor's Alex Glenn hit back-to-back threes to ignite a
14-4 run that cut HU's lead to four, 24-20, with just over four
minutes left in the half. The Foresters responded by outscoring the
Cougars by six to close out the half as they headed into the locker
room up 35-26.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the second half but the
Foresters pounded the ball inside to score seven quick points over a
two-minute span to push their lead to 47-32 at the 14:25 mark. The
Cougars returned the favor by tossing in seven of their own points
to cut HU's lead back to single digits at 47-39 with just over 13
minutes to play but it would be their last run as Courtney Beerbower
completed an old fashioned three-point play followed by Lauren
Meese's long trey to push Huntington's lead back to fourteen and
take the wind out of the Cougars' sails. The final 12:40 was all
Huntington as they went up by as many as 25 points before earning
the 20-point victory
Beerbower led a balanced Forester attack with 15 points. Jenna
Donaldson and Kelsey Green each chipped in 11. Green also added a
team-high seven rebounds. Tossing in ten points each to round out
the double-digit scoring for HU was Ryleigh Carr and Lauren Meese.
Glenn led all scorers with 17 points while teammate Kristin Kotarba
finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Foresters forced the Cougars into 25 turnovers while limiting
their turnovers to 11. Both teams shot the ball well behind the arc
with HU going 8-for-14 for 57% while the Cougars knocked down
7-for-14 for 50%.
