- Headed into Thanksgiving
break with another notch in the win column, the Foresters handed the
Racers of Northwestern Ohio the first loss of their season by a
score of 75-72.
Things looked good for HU as they built a ten point lead with seven
minutes left in the first half but the Racers trapping defense and
sharp shooting cut the lead to three 90 seconds later. The half
ended with the score knotted at 45-45 with the Racers having knocked
down 7 of 15 treys.
The Foresters jumped out to a quick 50-45 lead within the first
minute of the second half but once again it didn’t take the Racers
long to make up the difference. It was a game of spurts that saw
nine ties and eight lead changes. The biggest lead of the half came
with two minutes left in the contest when Kelsey Green scored on a
rebound to put the Foresters up 71-66. As was par for the course,
the Racers cut it to one with 36 ticks on the clock. The Racers
were forced to foul sending Lauren Meese to the foul line with 22
seconds left in the contest. She calmly hit nothing but the bottom
of the net on both attempts to put the Foresters up 75-72. The
Racers’ two desperation shots were off the mark giving HU the
hard-fought victory.
Kelsey Green came off the bench to lead the Foresters in scoring
with 19 points and nine rebounds. Ryleigh Carr and Courtney
Beerbower each chipped in 14 points and Meese finished with 12.
Leading all scorers was Ashley Jackson with 22 points. The Foresters
shot 50.9% (27-53) for the game while holding the Racers to 38.1%
(24-63). After struggling with free throw shooting for several
games, HU got back on track by connecting on 18-24 (75.0%). The
Foresters outrebounded Northwestern Ohio 40-30.
