It was opening night at the Merillat Complex for the Huntington
University Foresters (1-0) and they came away with a 70-53 win over
Cornerstone University (0-1).
In an
obvious case of first-game jitters, it took the Foresters nearly
five minutes to score their first field goal. Once they
settled down, they were able to capitalize on several Golden Eagle
turnovers and missed shots to take a 20-12 lead halfway through the
first half that would never be relinquished. Despite several
starters in foul trouble, HU was able to take a 38-28 lead into the
locker room.
The second half started much the same as the first with the
Foresters getting off to a slow start. Cornerstone cut the
lead to five on an offensive put back at the 15:46 mark. The
Foresters came back with a 7-2 spurt to push their advantage to 11 at
50-39 with just under
twelve minutes to play. The Golden Eagles put together one
more run to pull within six but a long trey by Sarah Miller gave the
Foresters the momentum they needed to go on a 23-9 run to close out
the game.
The Foresters put three in double figures with Kelsey Green leading
the way with 18 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. Sarah
Miller chipped in 13 points. After being plagued with first
half foul trouble Courtney Beerbower had a great second half to
finish with 12 points. Robyn Veltkamp led
Cornerstone with 15 while her twin sister Melissa Veltkamp tossed in
12. The Foresters recorded only 8 turnovers while forcing the
Golden Eagles into 23 miscues.
