2001-02 Season Summary

Collins Named All-American
3/13/02

The NAIA announced its 2002 Women's Basketball All-America Teams yesterday and senior Crissy Collins was selected as a Third Team All-American. Crissy finished her career with 1317 points and 753 rebounds. She stands seventh on HC's all-time scoring list.

Collins Receives All-Conference Honors
2/21/02

The Mid-Central Conference announced its awards for the 2001-02 season and Huntington College's Crissy Collins was runner-up Player of the Year to Goshen's Margene Murdent.  Collins averaged 18.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg on the year and finished her career with 1317 points.  Joining Murdent and Collins on the First Team are Brandy Swihart of Bethel, Krysten Parson of Goshen and Lori Warmoth of Marian.

Foresters Eliminated by Cougars
2/19/02

The Foresters dug themselves too deep of a hole in the first half and were eliminated from the MCC Tournament 84-60 by the Lady Cougars of St. Francis.  Lady Cougars Kara Moore and Carrie Stine both scored 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack that put four in double figures.  HC was led by last week's MCC Player of the Week Crissy Collins, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds.  In her two games last week, Collins averaged 26.5 ppg and 9 rpg, shot 56% from the field and went 17 for 18 from the line.  It was the second time this season that Collins received the honor.  Collins also finished her career with a total of 1317 points, which moved her past Coach Culler (1982-85, 1307) to seventh place on the all-time scorer's list.  The loss completes the women's season with a 7-19 record.

Foresters Downed by Cougars
2/16/02

The Foresters were able to hang with St. Francis for a half, but fell prey to the Lady Cougar hot hands in the second half, losing 84-67.  Both teams shot 48% from the field in the first half, which allowed the Foresters to keep within striking distance at 40-36 at the break.  But the Lady Cougars came out of the locker room on fire hitting 57% from the field, while HC managed just 42% in the second stanza.  Crissy Collins led all scorers with 25 points and 8 rebounds, while Sarah Gordon had 13 and Lane Allen 8.  St. Francis was led by Nickole Behnke's 19 points off the bench.  The loss drops the women to 7-18 to end the regular season.  The women will travel back to St. Francis on Tuesday evening, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. for the first round of the MCC Tournament.

Foresters Fall to IWU
2/13/02

A poor shooting night led to the Forester's 68-60 loss to Indiana Wesleyan University.  Despite having a season-low nine turnovers, HC just couldn't overcome their 38% shooting performance.  Down 16 with 15:21 left to play, the Foresters picked up their defensive intensity, and over the next twelve minutes, fought back to within three at 59-56.  But it was Kerri Hosier's three-point bucket following two Wildcat offensive rebounds that broke the Forester's back.  The shot put IWU up 62-56 with 1:17 to play and was all the Wildcats needed for the win.  Indiana Wesleyan's Stephanie Jackson led four Wildcats in double figures with 16 points.  For the Foresters, Crissy Collins had an impressive individual performance with 28 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 4 steals.  Bethany Woelffer was the only other Forester to reach double digits with 10 points off the bench.  As a side note, Collins' 28 points give her 1278 for her career and move her up to eighth on the all-time scoring list surpassing Bonnie Mevis (1984-88) who had 1261 points.  Collins needs 30 points to pass the next member of the list, Coach Culler, who had 1307  points in her career.

Turnovers Cost Foresters
2/9/02

Twenty-seven turnovers denied the Foresters any opportunity to avenge an earlier loss to the Taylor University Lady Trojans and led to their eighth straight loss as they fell 84-59.  Taylor got several steals off their press early in the game to take a 15-8 lead and led 41-28 at the half.  HC came out strong to start the second half and cut the deficit to 46-40 with 15:48 on the clock, but five turnovers in their next seven possessions ballooned the Lady Trojan lead to 17.  The Foresters cut the lead back to 14, but could get no closer.  Taylor put five in double figures with Bridget Carlson leading the way with 15.  HC's Sarah Gordon took game-high honors scoring 17 points on 6-10 shooting, including 5 of 7 from downtown.  Lane Allen and Crissy Collins each added 14.  The loss drops the women to 7-16 on the season and 2-10 in the MCC.

Foresters Lose Seventh Straight
2/6/02

Despite another solid effort, the Foresters come up short again losing 77-75 to Grace College.  HC out-rebounded the Lancers, had fewer turnovers, hit more free throws than Grace shot, and held their top two scorers well below their averages, but it was the Lancer's supporting cast that shot 64% going 23 of 36 from the field that lifted the Lancers to victory.  Grace's Arica Edwards, who came into the game averaging 4 ppg and 4 rpg, scored 23 points on 10 of 12 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds to claim game-high honors.  HC got career-highs from both Bethany Woelffer and Jennifer Bechtel, who scored 16 and 14 respectively, to lead the Foresters.  With the loss, the women fall to 7-15 on the season and 2-9 in the MCC.

Foresters Fall to Bethel
2/2/02

Through the first thirty minutes of the contest, the Foresters and the Pilots of Bethel College engaged in a seesaw battle that saw fifteen lead changes and eight ties.  But it was the Pilots that put together a 13-2 run over a three minute span between the nine and six minute marks of the second half that led to their 79-70 win.  After holding the Pilots to 39% shooting in the first half, the Foresters couldn't cool Bethel's hot hands as they hit 63% of their shoots in the second half.  Bethel's Brandy Swihart took game-high honors with 18 points and was joined in double figures by Stacy Handschu with 17 and Corey Duncan with 14.  HC returned to its more productive balanced scoring putting four players in double figures.  Crissy Collins had 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Sarah Gordon, Jami Kelley, and Rhonda Doud each added 12.  The loss drops the women to 7-14 on the year and 2-8 in the MCC.

Foresters Lose Fifth Straight
1/30/02

Defense kept the Foresters in the game, but it was the Marian College Knights that made the big plays in the final minute to get the 52-51 win.  Up 49-47 with 58 seconds remaining, the Foresters fouled Megan Dean on a made layup and fell behind 50-49 when Dean hit the ensuing free throw.  HC's Lane Allen put the Foresters back up one at 51-50 with 23 seconds left when she putback an offensive rebound on a Crissy Collins miss.  With the clock winding down, Marian's Brooke Reed misfired a 3-point attempt, got her own rebound, shot again and missed, and this time Marian's Lindsey Pride came up with the offensive board.  Pride was fouled as she tried to put up another shot with 7 seconds remaining.  Pride hit both free throws to put the Knights back on top 52-51.  Jami Kelley's reverse layup at the buzzer rolled off the rim.  Collins topped all scorers in the game with 22 and Allen finished with 13.  Megan Dean led the Knights with 12 off the bench and Shanie Smith added 11.  The loss is the Forester's fifth straight and drops them to 7-13 on the season and 2-7 in the MCC.

Collins MCC Player of the Week
1/28/02

Huntington College senior, forward Crissy Collins was named the Mid-Central College Conference Co-Player-of-the-Week for the week of January 21-26.  For the week, Collins averaged 32 points and 8 rebounds and shot 63% (29-46) from the field.  As a starting forward, Collins is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Foresters, averaging 18.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg, and continues to move up Huntington College’s list of all-time scorers. Her 1188 career points put her 10th on the list.  She needs 22 points to move past Christina Butts (1995-99, 1209), to number nine on the list.  Collins is the daughter of Pam Collins.

Foresters Fall to Goshen
1/26/02

The Goshen College Maple Leafs came out firing and ran way with a 90-72 win over the Foresters.  After being down 18 at the half, the Foresters came out strong in the second half and cut the lead to eight at 60-52, but could get no closer despite getting career-high points from both Crissy Collins and Lane Allen who scored 36 and 15 respectively.  Goshen all but eliminated HC's perimeter game, holding the Forester guards to 11 points on 5 of 23 shooting for 22%, while the Maple Leaf guards scored 39 points on 14 of 29 shooting for 48%.  Goshen's Margene Murdent equaled Collins offensive output of 36 points for game-high honors, while Lindsay Fisher added 17 and Erin McDugle 10.  With the loss, the women fall to 7-12 for the year and 2-6 in the conference.

Foresters Lose to Cougars
1/23/02

The St. Francis Cougars had too many weapons and knocked off the Foresters 78-65 to complete the first round of the conference season.  With St. Francis up 24-23 late in the first half, the Foresters went cold from the field and were out-scored 15 to 4 going into halftime.  In the second half, the Foresters fought back within seven, but could get no closer.  HC's Crissy Collins led all scorers with 28 points.  Sarah Gordon was the only other Forester in double digits with 13.  Carrie Stine led a balanced Cougar attack with 22 points.  Cassie Kline added 16, Megan Eckert had 15 and Nickole Behnke finished with 12.  The loss drops the Foresters to 7-11 on the season and 2-5 in the conference.

Foresters Fall to IWU
1/19/02

With their perimeter game non-existent, the Foresters struggled to a 75-63 loss to Indiana Wesleyan University.  Crissy Collins was the only one able to get on track offensively for the Foresters, but her 31 points and 16 rebounds were not enough to withstand the many offensive weapons of the Wildcats.  Indiana Wesleyan put four in double figures with Stephanie Jackson heading the list with 20 points.  Kerri Hosier, Amie Owsley, and Stephanie Gill added 19, 16, and 13 respectively.  The loss drops the women to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Taylor Outlasts the Foresters
1/16/02

The game was a defensive battle from start to finish, but it was the Lady Trojans of Taylor University that made the biggest defensive play of the game to earn the 59-56 win.  With the score knotted at 56 and :22 left on the clock, the Foresters could play for the last shot.  When HC inbounded the ball to Katie Harner, Taylor trapped her and forced a loose ball.  In the scramble for the ball, Lane Allen was called for a foul on Lady Trojan Lydia Harris with :18 remaining. Harris hit the first and missed the second, but it was Taylor that came up with the offensive rebound forcing HC to foul again.  Taylor's Jesse Turner knocked down both free throws to give them a three-point lead.  Sarah Gordon's 3-point attempt at the buzzer was blocked, foiling one of the Forester's best efforts of the season.  For the game, Crissy Collins led all scores with 22 points and Gordon added 20.  Taylor was led by Julie Rubel and Melanie Brumbaugh's 15 points each.  The loss drops the Foresters to 7-9 on the season and 2-3 in the MCC.

Foresters Down Grace
1/12/02

The Foresters put together a solid team effort to get a 68-58 win over Grace College on the road.  After the Foresters built a 15 point lead early in the second half, the Lancers charged back to within four at 50-46.  But HC got some help off the bench from Jennifer Bechtel, Stacy Plett and Bethany Woelffer to push the lead back to eight and hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win.  Sarah Gordon led three Foresters in double figures with 15.  Jami Kelley had a career high 14 points on 5-5 shooting and Crissy Collins added 10 points and 13 rebounds.  Grace's Danielle Mowery was the only Lancer to reach double figures and scored a game-high 27 points.  The win raises the women to 7-8 on the season and 2-2 in the MCC.

Foresters Falter on the Road
1/9/02

With 12 minutes remaining in the game, the Foresters had fought their way back to 51-46, but gave up too many second chance points (26) and fell 83-67 to Bethel College.  With leading rebounder Crissy Collins on the bench in foul trouble for most of the game, HC got out-rebounded 17-5 on the offensive boards, which led to their demise.  Bethel forward, Brandy Swihart, led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds.  Sarah Gordon finished with 18 points to lead HC.  The loss drops the women to 6-8 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Foresters Drop to 1-1 in Conference
1/5/02

Marian College's depth proved to be the difference in the Foresters' 76-68 conference loss.  Not only did the Knight's bench provide minutes to keep players fresh, it also outscored HC's bench 26-18, a margin equaling that of the final score.  Again the Foresters ran out to a big 13-point lead only to see it dissipate in the second half as Marian picked up its defense and held HC to seven field goals on 35% shooting.  Marian's Lori Warmoth led all scorers with 20.  The Foresters were led by Lane Allen's 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting. Crissy Collins added 12 points and 10 rebounds. With the loss, the women fall to 6-7 on the season a 1-1 in the conference.

Foresters Win Conference Opener
1/2/02

Hot shooting lifted the Foresters to an 83-78 win over Goshen College in their conference opener.  HC took a 44-35 lead into the locker room after shooting 51% from the field, but it was their 59% performance in the second half that won the game for them.  Late in the second half, Goshen charged back to within one at 71-70, but the Foresters never gave up the lead and knocked down shots down the stretch to seal the win.  Leading the Forester barrage was Crissy Collins, who scored 33 points on 14 of 20 shooting.  Joining Collins in double figures were Sarah Gordon with 17, Katie Harner with 12 and Lane Allen with 10.  Krysten Parson led the Maple Leafs with 19 points.  The win raises the women to 6-6 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.

Foresters Go 1-1 on Weekend
12/28-29/01

In Friday night's contest, the Foresters got off to a sluggish start falling behind Spalding University 21-10.  The women turned things around to take a four-point lead at the half and went on to win 79-68.  HC put five in double figures with Crissy Collins leading the way with 18 points followed by Sarah Gordon with 14.  Lane Allen, Katie Harner, and Bethany Woelffer each added 10.   The Foresters were not able to maintain their momentum into Saturday's game with IU Southeast falling 57-52 to the Lady Grenadiers.  Despite owning a 21-14 lead at the half, HC again failed to put an opponent away by committing too many turnovers and not finishing on the offensive end.  The women now head into their conference season with a 5-6 record.  As a side note, Crissy Collins became just the eleventh woman to join HC's 1000 Point Club during Saturday's game with IU Southeast.  Her 10 points against IUS brings her career total to 1006.  Congratulations Crissy!

Foresters Road Woes Continue
12/15/01

Despite leading the game for 37 minutes by as many as seven points, the Forester's faltered in the final three minutes and fell 75-72 to the Lady Titans of IU South Bend.  The Lady Titans took their first lead of the game at 70-68 with 3:01 left on the clock.  HC managed just one field goal and two free throws in the final minutes and let yet another game slip away.  The Foresters committed only eight turnovers, but shot just 40% to IU South Bend's 51% for the game.  IU South Bend's Nan Kogge led all scorers with 25 points.  Sarah Gordon and Crissy Collins both had 14 points to lead the Foresters, while Lane Allen and Jami Kelley both reached double figures with 11.  The loss drops the women to 4-5 on the season.

Foresters Get First Road Win
12/8/01

Jami Kelley's four free throws in the final minute lifted the Foresters to a 64-58 win over Siena Heights University, and gave HC their first road win of the season.  Although HC led by 8 at the half, the Saints grabbed 17 offensive rebounds in the second half and drew to within two on a few occasions, but could get no closer.  Sarah Gordon and Crissy Collins both scored 16 points to lead the Foresters, while Siena Heights' April Bradford took game-high honors with 18 points.   With the win, HC improves to 4-4 on the season.

Foresters Lose Third Straight
12/4/01

The Foresters took a ten point lead midway through the second half, but turned the ball over and put Spring Arbor at the line too many times to hold on.  The Cougars outscored HC 30-12 in the final nine minutes to win 76-68.  Spring Arbor's Portia Reilly led all scorers with 20 points including 10 of 13 from the line.  The Foresters were led by Katie Harner's 17 points and four steals.  Lane Allen added her third double-double of the season scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  The loss is HC's third in a row and drops them to 3-4 on the season.

Foresters Remain Winless on Road
12/1/01

Frigid shooting led to the Foresters third loss on the road, losing 56-55 in overtime to the 6-0 Grizzlies of Franklin College. Despite shooting just 23% in the first half, HC was just down two points at the half.   But their 37% shooting in the second was only good enough to get them to overtime with the score knotted at 51.  In the overtime period, Franklin's one field goal and three free throws were just enough for them to remain undefeated on the season.  Sarah Gordon took game-high honors for the Foresters with 20 points on 6-19 shooting, and Lane Allen added her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds.   Sayra Hoskins led the Grizzlies with 15 points and 9 rebounds.  With the loss, the Foresters fall to 3-3 on the season.

Foresters Lose to St Xavier
11/27/01

Turnovers and poor free throw shooting led to the Foresters demise as they lost to the Cougars of St. Xavier University 71-62.   St. Xavier played a very aggressive style of defense trapping all over the court and forced HC into 32 turnovers, but the Cougars also committed 25 fouls to the Forester's 12.  Unfortunately, HC missed 13 of their 30 free throw attempts and lost the bid for their first road win of the season.  Crissy Collins led the Foresters with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Sarah Gordon added 15 and Lane Allen had 10.  The Cougars were led by Annie Basic 's 16 points.  The loss drops the women to 3-2 on the season.

Foresters Win Three in a Row
11/20/01

After an eight year drought, the Foresters finally put one in the win column against Tri-State University, winning 73-65.  An impressive shooting performance (63%) in the first half helped HC build a 39-29 half-time lead, but the Thunder rolled back to within one at 48-47 before the Foresters were finally able to put them away.  Senior Katie Harner's hot hand led the Foresters, as she went 8-12 from the field, including 4-4 from downtown.  She also had 5 assists and 3 steals.  Sarah Gordon also had 21 points on 8-15 shooting, while Crissy Collins added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Foresters.  Game-high honors went to Tri-State's Crystal Hardesty who had 30 points on the night.  With the win, the women improve to 3-1 on the season.

Foresters Win Amerihost Tournament
11/16-17/01

After watching Olivet Nazarene University's high-powered and efficient offense score 92 points in Friday night's contest against Madonna University, the Foresters knew they had their work cut out for them if they were to win their third straight tournament title.  HC rose to the challenge and beat the Tigers 71-48 with some very aggressive half-court defense and a balanced scoring attack.  The Foresters put four in double figures led by Tournament MVP, Crissy Collins' 18 points and 8 rebounds.  Sarah Gordon added 13 points and 9 rebounds, All-Tournament Team member, Katie Harner, scored 12, and Lane Allen got the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 13 rebounds.  Olivet Nazarene was led by Lanita Thomas with 15 points and 7 rebounds.  HC got to Saturday's championship game by defeating Trinity Christian College on Friday evening 74-63.  Trinity Christian's Kara Bruxvoort took game-high honors with 27 points.  Collins had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Foresters, followed by Harner with 18 and Allen with 14.  The two wins raise the women's record to 2-1 on the season.

Foresters Drop Season Opener
11/13/01

The Foresters opened their season on the road against a feisty Indiana Tech squad and fell 74-62.  An aggressive Warrior press and sticky half court defense forced HC into 23 turnovers and 38% shooting.  Playing in their sixth game of the season, Indiana Tech displayed the poise and confidence that comes from game experience, and had an answer for every HC run.  The Foresters could get no closer than 67-63 with seven minutes remaining.  HC was led by Crissy Collins' 18 points and 9 rebounds.  Sarah Gordon added 16 and Jami Kelley chipped in 10 points, 4 assists and 4 steals.  Indiana Tech's Deana Olson led all scorers with 27 points.  The loss drops the women to 0-1 on the season.
