Huntington College HC
Gets Road Win The Foresters picked up a coveted MCC road win with their 59-42 victory over Goshen College. HC got off to a quick start scoring several baskets in transition to build an early lead over the Maple Leafs and then backed it up with some sticky defense to hold Goshen to just five field goals and 21% shooting in the first half. In the second half, the Foresters cooled off from the field, but continued to keep Goshen from establishing any offensive rhythm with some of their best defense of the year. HC pushed its 17-point halftime lead to as many as 26 midway through the second half to dash any Maple Leaf hopes of a comeback. HC's Betsey Bean was the top scorer in the game with 17 and added a team-high seven rebounds. Jessica Ramey chipped in 14 points, four steals and three assists, and Tiffany Malfait went 6-7 from the field for 13 points off the bench. Erin McDugle had 14 points to lead the Maple Leafs. HC Finishes Third In Tournament The Foresters (6-9) came from behind to defeat the Belles of St. Mary's College 66-62, giving them a third place finish in the St. Xavier University Christmas Tip-off Tournament. Huntington struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 9 of 30 attempts for 30%, and was fortunate to be down just six (33-27) at the break. The adjustment paid off as Huntington went 21-25 from the charity stripe to just 4-5 for the Belles. A solid effort by the Forester defense held St. Mary's to 1-14 shooting from behind the arc and just 29 points in the second half. Foresters Avenge Earlier Loss In the first round of the St. Xavier University Christmas Tip-off Tournament, the Foresters avenged an earlier loss with their 73-69 win over St. Ambrose University. HC fell to the Fighting Bees 80-72 in the championship game of the St. Ambrose Tournament back on December 6 when they were without starters Jessica Ramey and Janna Knisely. HC Skid Continues The Foresters' losing streak moved to six in a row with their 79-71 loss to Taylor University. During the skid, HC has continued to find ways to shoot itself in the foot. This time the Foresters could not keep the Trojans off the boards giving up 27 offensive rebounds in the contest. After allowing Taylor a 12-2 run to start the game, the Foresters seemed to settle down on both ends of the floor and pulled to within 29-26 at the half. HC moved to within one twice in the early minutes of the second half, but Taylor responded with a 10-2 run to end the Foresters' threat. HC continued to battle, but each time the Foresters seemed to be gaining the momentum, an untimely turnover or a Taylor putback would swing it the other way. Taylor's Melanie Brumbaugh took game-high honors in scoring and rebounding with her 18 points and 12 boards. Three Foresters scored in double figures with Amy Berry hitting for 16, Jamie Grogg 15, and Betsey Bean 12. With the loss, the women fall to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in the MCC. Box Score
Foresters Close Again Unfortunately for the Foresters, moral victories still go in the loss column. Once again HC gave an MCC opponent all they could handle, but fell 87-83 this time to the University of St. Francis. Playing from behind most of the first half, the Foresters battled to a 44-44 tie at the half. The second stanza was a seesaw affair with neither team able to gain more than a four-point margin until the Cougars put together a mini run to take their largest lead of the game at 75-67 with just over four minutes to play. HC again battled back to within two on four separate occasions, but two huge three pointers by USF's Shannon Pung and four consecutive free throws from Cassie Kline and Amanda Engleking sealed the win for the Cougars. The final statistics illustrate just how tight the game was. USF held slim advantages over the Foresters in field goal percentage (50.8 to 48.3%), rebounds (35-30), three pointers made (8-7) and free throws made (19-18). The biggest difference for the Cougars was the play of its bench. The USF reserves outscored the Foresters' second unit 37-4. Foresters' Upset Bid The NAIA Division II 5th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats (8-2) survived HC’s upset bid with a 76-63 double overtime win in their Mid-Central Conference opener. The Foresters were down 12 midway through the first half, but rallied to within six at the break. To start the second half, the Foresters committed four consecutive turnovers to allow the Wildcats to take a 28-18 lead. Following a Huntington timeout, the Foresters clawed their way back to take a 38-37 lead with just over eight minutes to play. The rest of regulation was a seesaw affair. Janna Knisely’s jumper from the left elbow with eight seconds to play brought Huntington even at 53-53 and Jennie Martin’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer dropped short for the Wildcats. In the first overtime, Huntington took an early four-point lead as a result of back-to-back turnovers by the Wildcats and had an opportunity to put the game out of reach with HC up 59-57 and Betsey Bean heading to the charity stripe with :23 left to play. Bean missed the front end of the one-and-one and IWU’s Martin dribbled the length of the floor and hit a layup to tie it at 59-59 with 16 seconds left. Jessica Ramey tried to return the favor, but her attempt was off the mark and Bean’s try after rebounding Ramey’s miss bounced off the rim sending the game to a second extra period. With both of Huntington’s starting forwards having fouled out, the Foresters were forced to help more inside in the second overtime, which opened up the perimeter for IWU. The Wildcats responded by knocking down three treys that finally put the Foresters away. Indiana Wesleyan’s Liz Howerth took game-high honors with her 26 points and nine rebounds. Jennie Martin added 18 and Abby Wilson had 12 for the Wildcats. Ramey, playing in her first full game since a pre-season injury sidelined her, scored 23 to lead the Foresters. Jamie Grogg had 15 and Bean added 10. The loss drops the women to 3-5 on the season. Box Score ODU Downs

Falls in 2OT The Aquinas College Saints out-lasted the Foresters to pick up the 82-80 win in double over-time. The Saints happily returned the favor after losing to HC 94-86 in double over-time last season at the Merillat Complex. Too many turnovers and offensive rebounds led to the Foresters' demise. After building as much as an 11-point lead early in the first half, the Foresters began coughing up the ball which allowed the Saints to cut the lead to three at the half at 31-28. Aquinas picked up their intensity to begin the second half and took the lead over the first five minutes of play. The Saints built and maintained an eight-point lead throughout most of the half until HC applied a full-court press. The Foresters came up with back-to-back steals that resulted in a trey from Jamie Grogg and a field goal by Kendra Stahl to cut the Saints lead to 57-56 with 6:07 left in regulation. The two teams battled back and forth with Aquinas owning a 68-66 lead with :21 left to play. HC brought the ball up the floor and got a shot a couple offensive rebounds before Janna Knisely was fouled on her attempt with 3.6 second left. Knisely sank both tosses to force overtime. In the first extra period, the Foresters again had to play catch-up. Down two, HC was forced to foul to stop the clock. Aquinas' Whitney March missed the first, but got the second to fall to give the Saints a three-point lead with 14 second to go. Knisely tried to spring Grogg with a high pick and roll, but both defenders stayed with Grogg. Knisely took the dish from Grogg and calmly hit the trey to send the game to a second overtime. Three costly Forester turnovers late in the period gave Aquinas a few extra opportunities on their offensive end, and the Saints' Ashley Heuvelman shot a running floater that found the bottom of the net as time expired. HC's Grogg led all scores in the game with 28 points on 10 of 15 shooting, including 6-7 from behind the arc and 2-2 from the line.
