10.23.04 - The #6 seeded Foresters recorded their first ever MCC tournament victory with a 2-0 upset win over the #3 seeded Bethel College Pilots. Just nine minutes into the game, Kara Fultz drew the defense with a run down the right side of the field and then slotted a pass to Heather O’Keefe. O’Keefe in turn found a wide open Sarah Kaufman on the left side who made it a 1-0 game. The Pilots had their best opportunity of the game a few minutes later when Lisa Franke drilled a hard shot that keeper Katie Stiffler was just barely able to deflect up and off the crossbar. In the second half, HC looked to take advantage of the strong wind and increased its lead when the Pilot defense misplayed the ball at midfield. Kaufman pounced on the break and beat the keeper to make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute. From there the Pilots turned up the pressure to get back in the game, but were unable to break through.  “This was a great win today,” said Coach Datema.  “We felt we let one slip away during the regular season against Bethel when they tied the game with just over a minute to play and then beat us in overtime.  “We really wanted another opportunity to play them. Bethel put unbelievable pressure on us after we went up 2-0 and we were fortunate to hold them scoreless. Ashley Gonterman had an outstanding game. Besides containing Bethel’s Lisa Franke, she also had to clear the ball several times after the Pilots had beaten our keeper.”  The win advances HC to the semi-final round where they will head to Michigan to take on the #2-seeded Spring Arbor University Cougars on Wednesday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m.  The win moves the Foresters to 8-8 on the season.
