- The Foresters opened the season with a 1-0
win at home over Manchester College. The teams
played to a scoreless tie at the half, and
although HC had the better scoring chances, no one
could find the back of the net. The second half
was much like the first, but this time Manchester
had several close chances and would have taken the
lead if not for a great save from HC keeper, Robyn
Althoff, who smothered a shot from point blank
range and then scrambled to haul in the rebound.
Throughout the game Manchester had trouble
shutting down freshmen striker Heather O’Keefe.
O’Keefe had a game high 12 shots, but just
couldn’t find the back of the net. With most of
the Spartan attention focused on O’Keefe the
game finally turned when the Forester’s other
freshmen striker, Sarah Kaufman, was sprung on a
break by Mindy Sincler. Kaufman carried the ball
into the penalty area and slotted home the game
winner in the 78th minute. "We
knew going into the season that we would have a
lot of fire power up front, but I was very pleased
with how our defense played today," said
Coach Datema. "Hannah Kaufman played an
outstanding game in leading the defense from her
center back position, and Katie Stiffler and Robyn
Althoff also played well as they split time in
goal."
