Although Spring Arbor walked away with a 5-0 win over the Foresters,
the game could have been vastly different had Sarah Kaufman, last
week's MCC and NAIA Region 8 Player of the Week, not run into some
misfortune. Early in the
game Kaufman twice had the Cougar keeper beat only to have her shots
saved off the goal line by Spring Arbor defenders. Then in the 10th
minute the Cougars turned the tables on HU and scored when the
Foresters failed to clear a corner kick completely. Kaufman’s
misfortune continued when she struck a shot that hit the crossbar, the
goal line, and the crossbar again before being corralled by the Cougar
keeper. A few minutes later Kaufman was on a breakaway with only the
keeper to beat but pushed the shot wide. Spring Arbor’s persistent
pressure paid off with another goal in the 42nd minute to take a 2-0
lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars
started to take control of the game and added a third goal in the
59th minute. Spring Arbor's pressure began to disrupt the Foresters'
passing game and they soon added another goal in the 64th minute
followed by another 11 minutes later. HU began to regain its composure
but could not find a consolation goal. “If we had finished our
chances, the game might have gone differently," said Coach Datema. "We
are starting to play a better passing game so we need to keep building
on that.”
Huntington now stands at 3-6 on the year and 1-3
in the MCC conference. |
