01.22.09 - Huntington University women’s soccer coach Ryan Burgher announced the signing of his first recruit, Kate Bienz, for the fall of 2009.  The Homestead High School standout hails from Fort Wayne, Indiana where this past season she captained the Spartans to the semi-states in the State tournament.

Throughout her high school career, Bienz helped her team claim conference titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. During her junior year campaign, she was named Second Team All-Conference. As a senior captain, Bienz led Homestead to a Regional Championship and was named First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-District.

Bienz has also been very successful not only playing soccer at Homestead but also playing with the Fort Wayne Sports Club and the Fort Wayne Fever soccer club.

In the classroom Bienz has also excelled. She is a strong student that has been on the academic honor roll all 4 years at Homestead High School. She has also been an active member in the St. Michael Youth Group and Young Life.

“Kate personifies the type of student-athlete we are looking for in this new era of Huntington Women’s Soccer.” said Huntington head coach Ryan Burgher. “Aside from being a very gifted player, Kate is quality individual. She is the type of player that is going to come into our program and make a tremendous impact on and off the field for the next four years.” Burgher said.

Bienz was highly recruited, but in the end, chose Huntington over conference rivals and several division one programs in Indiana.  Bienz, who will be majoring in nursing at Huntington says, “Huntington has everything I need in a college. HU has a great atmosphere, a profound nursing program, and an awesome soccer team.”

Bienz is the daughter of David and Mary Beth Bienz of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
