Huntington University women’s soccer coach Ryan Burgher announced
the signing of his tenth recruit
for the 2009 season, Michelle
Hawthorne from Jackson Christian High School in Jackson, Michigan.
In each of Hawthorne’s first three years
at Jackson Christian, she collected All-District honors. Hawthorne
also earned All-Region and Honorable Mention All-State honors. She
served as captain for her team and was awarded the Coach’s Award.
Hawthorne is in her senior campaign right now and will continue to
add to her list accolades. Hawthorne also plays for the Michigan
Rush soccer club.
Hawthorne has been very active in the
classroom, community, and church. In the classroom she carries above
a 3.9 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She spends
time in the community mentoring young students and as a member of
her church youth group, she has participated on mission’s trips to
Mexico and New York City.
“Michelle is exactly what we are looking
for at Huntington. She has a servant's heart and will be such a
leader in that respect,” said Coach Burgher. “Michelle is a tough
girl that gives 100% all the time. Her work ethic is exactly what I
want out of an HU women’s soccer player. Overall as a player and a
person Michelle is going to be a great addition to the family here
at HU.”
Hawthorne, the
daughter of Jon and Cindy Hawthorne, will be majoring in nursing at
Huntington. She says, “I was looking for a Christian
university with a nursing program and a soccer program, and
Huntington had everything I was looking for. I'm really excited to
be part of the team. Also I'm excited to meet new people and have a
good time!”
