Spring
Arbor Ends Season For HC The NAIA 20th-ranked Spring Arbor Cougars scored a goal early in both halves to end the Foresters' season with a 2-0 loss in the semi-final round of the MCC Tournament. In the first minute of play, the Cougars worked the ball down the left side and delivered a hard cross in front of the goal. The ball deflected off a Huntington defender and into the goal to give Spring Arbor the 1-0 lead. HC's defense responded , holding the Cougars scoreless the rest of the half.
The
second half started much like the first. Spring Arbor
picked up a loose ball outside the penalty area, dribbled
through the defense and scored two minutes into the half. Once
again the Foresters were forced to defend as the Cougar
possession made it difficult to mount an effective attack. HC
had its best opportunity to score with 20 minutes remaining when
Sarah Kaufman received the ball 45 yards from goal and caught
the keeper out, but her shot trickled wide of the post.
“Our bench really played well today," said Coach Datema.
"Sarah was very limited due to an injury in last
Saturday’s game and Christi Shook was injured midway through
the first half. That meant that we needed a lot of help off the
bench and I thought they played very well. Spring Arbor is a
great team and their possession game proved too much for us
today, but our players can hold their heads up because they gave
it everything they had.”
NOTE: Freshmen Hannah Kaufman, Sarah Kaufman and Heather O'Keefe were selected to the MCC All-Conference Team. Sarah led the team with 15 goals and seven assists, Heather was the team's second-leading scorer with 10 goals and six assists and Hannah anchored the Foresters' defense. Kaufman
MCC/Region 8 Player of Week
Sarah Kaufman, a freshman from Ada,
Michigan (Forest Hills Central High School), was named
Mid-Central Conference and NAIA Region VIII Player of the Week
for the week of October 18-24. Kaufman scored all four of
the Foresters’ goals during the week to help lead the team to
a 1-1 record. In Huntington’s 3-2 loss to Indiana
Wesleyan University, Kaufman’s two goals were the most allowed
by the Wildcats’ keeper in eight Mid-Central Conference (MCC)
matches. In the Foresters’ second game of the week, a
2-0 upset win over #3-seeded Bethel College in the MCC
tournament, Kaufman scored a goal in each half to lead
Huntington to the program’s first-ever tournament victory.
Huntington is currently 8-8 on the season and next travel to
#2-seeded Spring Arbor University on Wednesday, October 27 for
the 2:00 p.m. semi-finals of the MCC Tournament.
HC
Gets First Tourney Win
The #6 seeded Foresters recorded
their first ever MCC tournament victory with a 2-0 upset win
over the #3 seeded Bethel College Pilots. Just nine minutes into
the game, Kara Fultz drew the defense with a run down the right
side of the field and then slotted a pass to Heather O’Keefe.
O’Keefe in turn found a wide open Sarah Kaufman on the left
side who made it a 1-0 game. The Pilots had their best
opportunity of the game a few minutes later when Lisa Franke
drilled a hard shot that keeper Katie Stiffler was just barely
able to deflect up and off the crossbar. In the second half, HC
looked to take advantage of the strong wind and increased its
lead when the Pilot defense misplayed the ball at midfield.
Kaufman pounced on the break and beat the keeper to make it 2-0
in the 53rd minute. From there the Pilots turned up
the pressure to get back in the game, but were unable to break
through. “This was a great win today,” said Coach
Datema. “We felt we let one slip away during the regular
season against Bethel when they tied the game with just over a
minute to play and then beat us in overtime. “We really
wanted another opportunity to play them. Bethel put unbelievable
pressure on us after we went up 2-0 and we were fortunate to
hold them scoreless. Ashley Gonterman had an outstanding game.
Besides containing Bethel’s Lisa Franke, she also had to clear
the ball several times after the Pilots had beaten our
keeper.” The win advances HC to the semi-final round
where they will head to Michigan to take on the #2-seeded Spring
Arbor University Cougars on Wednesday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m.
The win moves the Foresters to 8-8 on the season.
Foresters
Fall to IWU
The Foresters closed their regular
season schedule with a 3-2 loss to Indiana Wesleyan University.
After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats, needing a win to
clinch the conference championship, netted three goals to HC's
two to earn the MCC title. In the second half, IWU started
the scoring in the 55th minute when Ashley Palmer dribbled past
two defenders and hit a long shot into the goal. IWU doubled
their lead in the 62nd minute when HC failed to clear the ball
at the edge of the penalty box and Megan Sweeney blasted the
shot home. Five minutes later HC got back in the game when Sarah
Kaufman took the ball from a Wildcat defender, hit a shot off
the cross bar, and headed home the rebound. IWU regained the two
goal lead 10 minutes later when Teresa Walters jumped on a loose
ball and scored. The Foresters responded again when Heather
O'Keefe sent a shot that rebounded off the crossbar to Kaufman
who scored her second of the game in the 86th minute. The
Wildcat defense held from there to preserve the 3-2 win.
"We played well tonight," said Coach Datema. "IWU
doesn't give up many goals so I was pleased with the goals we
scored. The goals that were scored against us were all
correctable situations so we feel pretty good heading into the
tournament this weekend." Heading into the MCC
tournament this weekend, the Foresters stand at 7-8 overall and
completed the conference regular season schedule with a 3-5
record. First round pairings and game times for Saturday will be
released later today.
Goshen
Edges HC For the second week in a row HC was upended by an MCC rival in sudden death overtime. This time it was Goshen College that edged the Foresters 1-0 for the double overtime win. HC pressured the Goshen defense for much of the game and held a significant advantage in shots on goal (11-2) and corner kicks (8-3), but couldn’t find the net. Goshen finally got the winner with 3:37 to go in the second overtime on a counter attack. "I was pleased with how active we were on the ball tonight," said Coach Datema. "In addition to the shots on goal we also had a lot of shots that were just off frame, so we really had a lot of chances to win this game. Goshen’s defense would bend but just wouldn’t break. You have to give them credit for hanging in there the way they did.” HC now stands at 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the MCC. Foresters
Fall in OT Despite owning the lead on three occasions, the Foresters couldn't put away Bethel College and fell 4-3 in overtime. HC got on the board in just the third minute when Heather O’Keefe finished a Mindy Sincler assist. It looked like HC would take the one goal lead into the half, but Bethel's Lisa Franke got the equalizer in the 43rd minute. The Foresters struck early again in the second half when Beth Padilla got on the end of an O’Keefe cross and shot a lofted ball toward goal which the Pilot keeper couldn’t handle. The lead held up until the 70th minute when the Pilots once again equalized. HC appeared to get the game winner in the 84th minute when O’Keefe played a great ball in to Sarah Kaufman who slotted it home. But Bethel again fought back to knot the score at 3-3 with just 1:47 remaining in the game. The late heroics continued for Bethel as they found the game winner in the final minute of the first overtime period. "Despite the fact that several of our players were a little off on their touch today, I thought we were going to pull it out," said Coach Datema. "We played hard and had a lot of good scoring chances, but Bethel is a dangerous team and they deserved the win today. They showed a lot of heart coming back the way they did.” HC stands at 7-6 on the season and 3-3 in the MCC with the loss. HC
Wins Fourth Straight Heather O'Keefe put HC ahead with a goal in the third minute of play and the Foresters cruised to their fourth consecutive win with the 3-0 shutout over Taylor University. Beth Padilla gave HC a 2-0 lead in the 28th minute when she won a challenge on a Trojan defender and beat the keeper. Fifteen minutes into the second half Mindy Sincler fed Sarah Kaufman who completed the scoring for the Foresters. Solid defending the rest of the way kept Taylor at bay and preserved the 3-0 win. Robyn Althoff and Katie Stiffler combined in goal for the shutout with nine saves. “This was a great effort from front to back," said Coach Datema. "Kristyn Bollig had a strong game in the midfield and the Hannah Kaufman-led defense was stellar. Hannah plays with a lot of confidence and composure and I think the rest of the team feeds off of that. This was Taylor’s first conference loss (4-1) this year, so this was a big win for us.” HC now stands at 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the MCC. Kaufman
MCC Player of Week O'Keefe
Hat Trick Leads
To Win Foresters
Get First MCC Win A
cool rainy afternoon provided great soccer weather for the
Foresters to pick up their first conference win of the season, a
3-0 shutout over visiting HC
Routs St. Mary of the Woods The
Foresters scored their first goal three minutes into the game and
never looked back as they shut out St. Mary of the Woods 6-0.
Mindy Sincler was the first to find the back of the net for
HC and Heather O’Keefe followed suit seven minutes later off a
pass from Sarah Kaufman. In
the 19th minute, Kaufman drove home her first of two
goals in the game and Melissa McFadden added back-to-back goals in
the 26th and 28th minutes to give the
Foresters a commanding 5-0 lead at the half.
Kaufman scored HC’s lone goal of the second half off an
assist from Laura Perry to complete the scoring.
“Melissa made the most of her opportunities today and it
was good to see her put two in the back of the net,” said Coach
Datema. “I was also
pleased with the play of Sarah Kaufman.
She had a big impact on the game in limited minutes.”
The win moves the Foresters to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in
the MCC. Foresters
Fall To #25 Cougars The Foresters battled the NAIA 25th-ranked Cougars of St. Francis, but couldn't find the back of the net and fell 2-0. The Cougars carried most of the play and finally went ahead with a goal in the 43rd minute. HC looked to step it up it up in the second half, but St. Francis continued their high level of play and increased their lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute. The Foresters had a breakaway opportunity in the second half, but the Cougar keeper was able to push Heather O'Keefe's shot off the crossbar. "We were disappointed in how we played today, said Coach Datema. "It has been a hard week and it just seemed like we didn't have much energy out there today. St. Francis is a good team and their possession game took its toll on our players. We've made it through the toughest part of our schedule though so we are looking to finish strong in the second half of the season." With the loss Huntington now stands at 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in the MCC. Spring
Arbor
Too Much For HC The Foresters opened MCC play with a 4-1 loss to Spring Arbor University. Although HC struck first when Heather O'Keefe took a pass from Sarah Kaufman and scored just 18 seconds into the match, the NAIA Region VIII #3-ranked Cougars proved to be too much for HC over the long haul. With the Foresters up 1-0, Spring Arbor responded quickly with the equalizer in the 8th minute and then took the lead in the 23rd minute. In the last twenty minutes of the first half HC gambled and tried to rest six starters for the second half, but the Cougars took advantage with just 30 seconds to go to take a 3-1 half time lead. In the second half, the Foresters were unable to mount much of an attack and Spring Arbor added its fourth goal at the 52nd minute mark to complete the scoring. "We gave a lot of effort out there today, but SAU is such a quality team from top to bottom," said Coach Datema. "I was pleased with how some of our players competed today though. Freshmen Jennifer Stern had her hands full at right back all day long but she never quit. That’s the kind of effort we need.” HC drops to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in the MCC. HC
Hammers Hanover
The Foresters out-shot the Hanover
College Panthers 14-2 and ran away with the 5-1 win. HC
polished off a well played first half with a goal in the 37th
minute by Sarah Kaufman, assisted by Mindy Sincler, and another in
the 43rd minute by Heather O'Keefe, assisted by Kaufman. The
Foresters' sloppy play to start the second half gave Hanover a
glimmer of hope as it allowed the Panthers to score a goal in the
60th minute. HC quickly righted the ship eight minutes later as
Sincler restored the two-goal margin with a free kick from 25
yards out. The Foresters cruised from there with a goal in the
74th minute by Joy Bamford and a final goal in the 88th minute
from Heather O'Keefe, on an assist by Melissa McFadden. "We
were able to move the ball around well today and that gave us a
lot of opportunities," said Coach Datema. "We lost
our focus for a few minutes there in the second half, but the team
responded well." The Foresters even their record at 3-3
with the win.
Foresters
Hold On For Win The Foresters scored two goals before giving up one to the Anderson University Ravens, but were able to hold on for the 2-1 win. HC got on the board early with a goal by Kara Fultz assisted by Sarah Kaufman at the 11 minute mark. Neither team was able to generate much offense the rest of the half until Kara Fultz earned a penalty kick at the 30 minute mark. Unfortunately Fultz's shot went wide left and the half ended at 1-0. In the second half, quick thinking by Mindy Sincler led to HC’s second goal in the 50th minute. Sincler quickly took a direct free kick before the Ravens were able to get organized and was able to find the back of the net. Anderson responded with a goal of its own in the 59th minute, but could not come up with the equalizer. "I’m really proud of how our team played today," said Coach Datema. "Anderson proved to be an awkward match-up for us, but I thought we played with composure and got the job done." The Foresters had 11 shots on goal to just 5 for the Ravens, and had two corner kicks to just one for Anderson. With the win, the women move to 2-3 on the season. Experience
Lifts TCC To Win
The Lady Trolls of Trinity Christian
College out-scored the Foresters 3-1 in the second half to earn the
5-3 victory over HC. TCC put on pressure early and broke
through with a goal in the 25th minute with a goal from Jessica
Eenigenburg. HC responded seconds later when Sarah Kaufman
touched the ball into the net off an assist from Heather O'Keefe. HC
took the lead in the 33rd minute when O'Keefe crossed a ball in
front of the goal and found Mindy Sincler for the score. HC couldn't
hold the lead for long as TCC equalized in minute 41 to knot the
score at 2-2 at the half. TCC continued to press in the second half
and took the lead nine minutes into the second stanza. But the
Foresters fought back and O'Keefe got the equalizer with just 16
minutes left on a breakaway. TCC struck back with just over three
minutes remaining to take the lead and added one more in the closing
seconds to seal the win. "We had two good opportunities
to take the lead in the closing minutes of the game and if we had
scored I think we would have been able to hold on for the win. But
TCC's keeper came up big, and I think our inexperience showed a bit
today," said Coach Datema. "We are improving though and
I'm excited about the rest of the year." The loss drops
the women to 1-3 on the season.
Indiana
Tech Downs HC
The Indiana Tech Warriors scored a goal in
each half while holding the Foresters scoreless to take the 2-0 win.
Tech's Gina Shultz struck in the 7th minute to give Indiana Tech the
1-0 lead, and then just four minutes into the second half, Kara Walker
put the game out of reach with the Warrior's second goal of the game.
Indiana Tech took 33 shots on goal to HC's 20 and had seven corner
kicks to just five for the Foresters. "Indiana Tech takes a
lot of shots, but most of them are from distance and cause little
trouble," said Coach Datema. "The two goals they scored were
off hustle plays and that pretty much summed up the game. They
challenge for every ball and it paid off for them. Amanda Borders had
a good game on defense for us filling in for the injured Christi
Shook. Amanda held her own against some very good strikers."
The Foresters fall to 1-2 on the season.
Cornerstone
Edges HC
A strong Cornerstone University squad edged
the Foresters 1-0 in HC's second game of the season. The Golden
Eagles, who blanked the Foresters 6-0 last season, pressed the attack in
the first half and finally took the lead in the 22nd minute. HC keeper,
Katie Stiffler, attempted to smother a shot off the foot of
Cornerstone's Melissa Strohmaier, but the ball came loose and Strohmaier
was able to put away the rebound. In the second half, the Foresters
stepped up their game and were able to play even with Cornerstone. It
looked as if HC would get the chance to equalize in the 79th minute when
Kara Fultz was hauled down from behind in the box, but no call was made.
"Cornerstone was the stronger side
today, but I think this game showed some of our players that they can
compete at a higher level," said Coach Datema. "With injuries
to Fultz and Christi Shook we ended up playing five and six freshmen for
much of the second half. Even so we felt a win was a reasonable
expectation. This is something we can build on." With the
loss, the women fall to 1-1 on the season.
HC
Wins Season Opener The Foresters opened the season with a 1-0 win at home over Manchester College. The teams played to a scoreless tie at the half, and although HC had the better scoring chances, no one could find the back of the net. The second half was much like the first, but this time Manchester had several close chances and would have taken the lead if not for a great save from HC keeper, Robyn Althoff, who smothered a shot from point blank range and then scrambled to haul in the rebound. Throughout the game Manchester had trouble shutting down freshmen striker Heather O’Keefe. O’Keefe had a game high 12 shots, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. With most of the Spartan attention focused on O’Keefe the game finally turned when the Forester’s other freshmen striker, Sarah Kaufman, was sprung on a break by Mindy Sincler. Kaufman carried the ball into the penalty area and slotted home the game winner in the 78th minute. "We knew going into the season that we would have a lot of fire power up front, but I was very pleased with how our defense played today," said Coach Datema. "Hannah Kaufman played an outstanding game in leading the defense from her center back position, and Katie Stiffler and Robyn Althoff also played well as they split time in goal."
