Foresters Looking To Improve

Kristen Freeman's return to the Forester lineup was a bright spot for the Foresters in their 7-2 loss to the Taylor Trojans.  Playing at #4 singles, Freeman defeated Bridget Carlson 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and the #2 doubles team of Lindsey Weber and Freeman won 7-5, 6-4.  Becky Harness lost at #1 singles 4-6, 2-6, #2 Beth Zilligen fell by the same score, #3 Weber lost 4-6, 3-6, #5 Jessica Brown lost 1-6, 0-6, and #6 Hannah Fairchild fell 1-6, 4-6.  In doubles, #1 Harness and Zilligen lost 4-6, 4-6 and #3 Brown and Stacy Plett fell 6-7, 0-6.  "We are making progress.  I am really proud of how hard the women are working on improving their individual skills", said Coach Turner.  The women fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.

Foresters Get In The Win Column

The women got three key wins from their doubles teams to notch their first win of the season 5-4 over Tri-State University.  In singles, only #5 Kristen Freeman (6-2, 6-0) and #6 Jessica Brown (6-1, 6-2) came through with wins to help pick up the slack for the top of the lineup.  At #1 doubles, Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber won 8-4, #2 doubles Beth Zilligen and Brooke Owens won 9-7, and #3 doubles of Brown and Stacy Plett won 8-2.  In their second match of the weekend, the women came close to pulling off their first conference win, but fell 5-4 to Bethel College.  Again it was the bottom of the lineup that continued to pull its weight.  #5 Kristen Freeman defeated Kristin Conn 6-1, 6-0 and #6 Jessica Brown beat Erica Root 6-1, 6-3.  Unlike their prior match, the doubles teams were unable to pull out the win for the Foresters.   Zilligen and Owens and Brown and Plett both won 8-6 at #2 and #3 doubles, but Bethel defeated Harness and Weber at #1 doubles 4-8.  The women now stand 1-5 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.

HC Dominates Grace For First Conference Win

The match was never in doubt as the women rolled to an 8-1 win over Grace College to earn their first conference victory.  At #1 singles, Becky Harness grabbed her first win of the season with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Angie Henley.  #3 Lindsey Weber (6-4, 6-4), #4 Brooke Owens (6-2, 6-2), #5 Kristen Freeman (6-0, 6-0), and #6 Jessica Brown (6-0, 6-0) also were in the win column for the Foresters.  HC won all three doubles matches dropping just nine games total.  With the win, the women move to 2-5 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

Foresters Blank St. Francis 9-0

Confidence and consistency were the keys in the women's dominate performance over the University of St. Francis.  "We are starting to stroke the ball better with every match.  We are gaining confidence and playing a more consistent ground game," said Coach Turner.  HC dropped just one set on the day as Beth Zilligen beat Liz Clark 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 at #2 singles.  At #1 singles, Becky Harness won 6-4, 6-3, #3 Lindsey Weber won 6-1, 6-3, #4 Brooke Owens won 6-3, 6-4, #5 Kristen Freeman won 6-1, 6-4, and #6 Jessica Brown won 6-2, 6-4.  In doubles play, Harness and Weber won 8-6 at #1 doubles, #2 Zilligen and Owens won 8-5, and #3 Brown and Stacy Plett won 8-2.  The women improve to 3-5 on the season and conclude their regular season conference schedule at 2-5.

Hillsdale Match Canceled

The women were able to get just three doubles matches in before the rains came.  At this point, the match has not been rescheduled.

Foresters Fall to Anderson

Darkness hampered what could have been a different match as the women dropped a 6-3 decision to Anderson University.  Because daylight was fading quickly, #1 Becky Harness and #3 Lindsey Weber had to play a tiebreaker as their third set.  Only Weber was able to pull off the victory winning 3-6, 6-1, (7-5).  Weber was a double winner teaming with Harness to win at #1 doubles 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.  Jessica Brown was the only other winner for HC at #6 singles (6-0, 6-1).  The women fall to 3-6 on the season.

Foresters Lose Another Close One

It was another 5-4 heartbreaker.  Trailing the Spartans of Manchester College 2-1 after doubles, the Foresters needed to win four of the six singles matches, but came up one short.  HC's Lindsey Weber was a double winner again at #3 singles (6-4, 6-1) and #1 doubles with partner Becky Harness (9-8).  Brooke Owens won 6-1, 6-1 at #4 singles and #5 Kristen Freeman won when her opponent retired in the third set (4-6, 6-2, 2-1), rounding out the scoring for the Foresters.  With the loss, the women drop to 3-7 on the season.

HC Handles Grace 9-0

For the second time this season, the Foresters defeated Grace College 9-0.  The women were even more dominate this time, dropping just 15 games in nine matches as compared to 31 in their previous meeting.  Leading the way for HC was Becky Harness who defeated Angie Henley 6-1, 6-0 in #1 singles.  Beth Zilligen won at #2 singles 6-2, 6-2, while #3 Lindsey Weber won 6-0, 6-1, #4 Kristen Freeman and #5 Jessica Brown both won 6-1, 6-0 and #6 Stacy Plett won 6-2, 6-1.  Harness and Weber won 8-2 at #1 doubles and both #2 doubles (Freeman/Zilligen) and #3 doubles (Dana Starks/Hannah Fairchild) won 8-1.  The win gives the women an emotional lift and some momentum to take into this week's conference tournament.  HC finishes the regular season at 4-7.

HC Fifth After MCC First Round

The Foresters earned three points in the first round of the MCC Women's Tennis Tournament to put them in fifth place in the standings.  Indiana Wesleyan and Goshen are tied for the lead with 9 points each, followed by Taylor with 7, and Marian with 6.  HC picked up wins at #5 singles with Kristen Freeman beating Marian's Paula O'Conner 6-4, 6-4, #6 singles with Jessica Brown defeating St. Francis' Jennifer Workman 6-3, 6-1 and #3 doubles with Brown and Stacy Plett beating St. Francis' Knafel and Workman 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.  Becky Harness lost at #1 singles to Bethel's Sarah Mater 5-7, 1-6, Beth Zilligen lost at #2 singles to Goshen's Jennifer Springer 1-6, 0-6, #3 Lindsey Weber lost to Indiana Wesleyan's Adriane Shapiro 3-6, 1-6, #4 Brooke Owens lost to Marian's Mandie Schooler 3-6, 3-6, #1 doubles Harness and Weber lost to IWU's Julie Beekman and Sarah Dukeman 2-6, 0-6, and #2 doubles Zilligen and Owens lost to IWU's Shapiro and Smith 1-6, 0-6.

HC Fifth In MCC Tournament

The three points the women earned in the first round were all they could muster in the MCC Conference tennis tournament.  They finished fifth behind Indiana Wesleyan (24), Goshen (14), Taylor (11), and Marian (8).  First round winners, #5 Kristen Freeman, #6 Jessica Brown, and #3 doubles Brown and Stacy Plett, all lost in the semifinal round.  Freeman fell to IWU's Diana Hedgebeth 2-6, 1-6, Brown lost to Taylor's Jenny Hoyt 1-6, 2-6 and Brown/Plett fell to Goshen's Schmidt/Zoss 2-6, 1-6.  Coach Turner says that patience is the key for the women's future.  "We struggled all fall because of the changes I have made to their games.  They have been very patient.  I told them we would have a hard time winning this year, but that we are building for the future. They understand that and are working hard.  I am very proud of them."  Congratulations on a fine season!

Foresters Earn Weekend Split
4/6/02

The women's tennis team played two matches on Saturday and earned a split, defeating Anderson 7-2 and losing 8-1 to IU Southeast.  Against Anderson, the Foresters won four singles matches and swept the three doubles matches to post their fifth win of the year.  HC's Lindsey Weber led the team with three wins on the day.  At #3 singles, Weber outlasted Anderson's Amy Webb 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 and defeated IUS' Jessica Staggs 6-4, 6-2 and teamed with Becky Harness at #1 doubles for a 9-8 win over Anderson's Grace Wilhoite and Staggs.  Other singles winners in the Anderson match include #4 Brooke Owens (3-6, 6-3, 6-2), #5 Kristen Freeman (6-1, 6-4), and #6 Jessica Brown (6-1, 6-3).  Beth Zilligen and Owens won 8-5 at #2 doubles and Stacy Plett and Brown won 8-2 at #3 doubles.  Weber was the sole winner in the IU Southeast match.  The women are now 5-8 on the year.

Foresters Fall To Thunder
4/11/02

The women's tennis team fought hard, but lost a close match to Tri-State University 6-3.  HC got wins from Becky Harness (6-4, 6-4) at #1 singles, Brooke Owens (6-2, 5-7, 6-3) at #3, and Kristen Freeman (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) at #4.  Three other matches could have gone either way, but the Thunder took all three to secure the win.  Lindsey Weber lost a tough 3-set match at #2 singles 2-6, 6-2, 4-6, while #1 doubles Harness and Weber lost 8-6 and #3 doubles Hannah Fairchild and Dana Starks fell 9-7.  The loss drops the women to 5-9 on the season.

ONU Knocks Off HC
4/13/02

With #2 Beth Zilligen out of the singles lineup with an injury, the women's tennis team fell to Olivet Nazarene University 6-3.  "Everyone but #1 Becky Harness had to move up one spot," said Coach Turner. "I thought that was the deciding factor."  HC got wins from Brooke Owens and Zilligen at #2 doubles, while Stacy Plett and Jessica Brown won at #5 and #6 singles respectively.  Harness and Lindsey Weber lost a close match 8-6 at #1 doubles and Owens and Kristen Freeman both lost heartbreakers at #3 and #4 singles.  The women fall to 5-10 on the season with the loss.

Taylor Outlasts Foresters
4/25/02

The Foresters took to the courts against the Lady Trojans of Taylor University and fell 5-4 in a tightly contested match.  With two matches left on the courts, the Foresters trailed 4-3.  Dana Starks (#6 singles) and Kristen Freeman (#4 singles) were both in their third sets.  Starks brought HC to a tie at 4 all when she knocked off Taylor's Kristen Hess 7-5 in the third set for the win.  Freeman was down 5-2 in the third, but fought her way back to get to a tie-breaker.  The tie-breaker went back and forth, but it was Taylor's Renee Stoller who came away with the 8-6 win in the tie-breaker, which gave Taylor the 5-4 win.  Along with Starks, other HC winners included Becky Harness at #1 singles, Harness and Lindsey Weber at #1 doubles, and Freeman and Hannah Fairchild at #3 doubles.  Despite the loss, HC did show improvement as they lost 7-2 to Taylor back in the fall.  The women conclude their season with a 5-11 record.
