2002-03 Season Summary

Foresters Conclude Season
4/28/03

The Foresters concluded their season with a 7-2 loss to a talented Walsh University squad.  Lindsey Weber was a double winner on day.  She teamed with Katie Turner to pick up the 8-4 win at #2 doubles and then brought down Erin Sunseri 6-4, 6-2 at #2 singles.  With the loss, the women finish the 2002-03 season with a record of 7-11.

Foresters Fall to Cedarville
4/26/03

It was a disappointing day for the Foresters as they let a potential win slip through their fingers and fell 7-2 to Cedarville University.  HC got wins in singles from #1 Becky Harness (6-3, 6-3) and #3 Beth Zilligen (7-5, 6-4) and were close in three others with #4 Katie Turner losing in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 5-7), #2 Lindsey Weber falling 0-6, 5-7, and #6 Kyleigh Gast losing 3-6, 6-7.  HC still had a shot at winning the match if they could pull off the sweep of the doubles, but instead, dropped all three to the Yellow Jackets.  They lost 8-5 at #1 doubles, 8-3 at #2 and 9-8 at #3.  The loss drops the women to 7-10 on the year.

Taylor Routs Foresters
4/22/03

The Taylor University Trojans took it to the Foresters, knocking them off 8-1.  Becky Harness was the lone winner for HC with a three-set victory over Katie Clark at #1 singles.  The win avenges a loss to Clark in the fall.  Although the score appears very lopsided, most of the other matches were close and could have gone either way, including Katie Turner and Lindsey Weber at #2 doubles and Beth Zilligen #3 singles who lost in tiebreakers.  The loss drops the women to 7-9 on the year.

Foresters Handle Anderson
4/15/03

Battling a stiff wind, the Foresters remained focused and came away with a 7-2 victory over Anderson University. Dana Starks was HC's top performer on the day. With Stacy Plett sidelined with an injury, Starks moved up from #6 to #5 singles and posted the 6-1, 6-3 victory and combined with Kyleigh Gast to get the 8-5 win at #3 doubles. Katie Turner was the only other double winner in the match earning a 6-3, 6-4 win at #4 singles and an 8-5 victory with partner, Lindsey Weber at #2 doubles. Becky Harness (2-6, 6-2, 7-5) and Beth Zilligen (5-7, 6-3, 6-3) both dropped their first set in singles play, then came back to get wins at #1 and #3 singles respectively, and Hannah Fairchild won 6-3, 6-4 at #6 singles. The win raises the women's record to 7-8 on the year.

Foresters Rout Grace
4/9/03

Despite cold and windy playing conditions, the Foresters took care of business, routing the Grace College Lancers 9-0.  In doubles play, Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber got the 8-1 victory a #1, Beth Zilligen and Katie Turner won 8-4 at #2, and Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast dominated at #3, winning 8-0.  HC finished strong in singles play with each player winning in straight sets and no one giving up more than three games in a set.  At #1 singles, Harness won 6-1, 6-1, Weber won 6-3, 6-3 at #2, Zilligen got the 6-3, 6-1 victory at #3, Turner won 6-2, 6-2 at #4, Plett took #5 singles at 6-2, 6-0, and Dana Starks picked up her first win of the spring season at #6, winning 6-2, 6-1.  With the win, the women move to 6-8 on the season.

Foresters Show Improvement
4/5/03

The Huntington College women’s tennis team took on a tough Indiana University Southeast squad and fell 6-3.  HC took #2 doubles with Lindsey Weber and Katie Turner getting the 9-7 win.  Becky Harness and Beth Zilligen fell 8-5 at #1 doubles and Stacey Plett and Kyleigh Gast dropped a close one at 8-6.  In singles action, Zilligen won 7-6, 7-5 at #3 and Plett won 6-1, 7-5 at #5.  Despite the loss, Coach Turner saw improvement in the results over last year's IUS match where the women lost 8-1.  "Last year IUS beat us handily where most of the matches were blowouts," said Coach Turner."   Saturday was a different story as all of the doubles matches were close and several of the singles matches cold have gone either way."  With the loss, the women fall to 5-8 on the season.

Foresters Fall in Spring Opener
4/3/03

The Huntington College women’s tennis team traveled to Tri-State University for their first competition of the spring and fell 5-4 to the Thunder.  HC started strong, taking two of the three doubles matches.  Becky Harness and Beth Zilligen won 8-4 at #1 doubles and Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast won 8-2 at #3.  Then the wheels fell off as they dropped four of the six singles matches.  Harness pulled out a three setter, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, at #1 singles and Gast won easily, 6-0, 6-2, at #6.  The loss drops the women to 5-7 on the year.

Foresters 6th in MCC Tournament
10/10-12/02

The Huntington College women’s tennis team had a rough outing as they could muster only a 6th place finish in the MCC Tournament.  Indiana Wesleyan University won the tournament, continuing its dominance in the conference.  The only Foresters to make it through to the second round were Stacy Plett at #5 singles and the number one doubles team of Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber.   Plett won her first match over Michi Yamano of St. Francis 6-3, 6-1, then lost to IWU’s Diana Hedgebeth, 1-6, 0-6.  The only other close match in singles was at number one where Harness dropped a three-set heart-breaker 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, to Jennifer Springer of Goshen  who was undefeated going into the tournament.  “Becky was playing very well and I thought she could pull off the upset.”

In other singles matches, Weber was eliminated in the first round at love by IWU's Kristi Shuck at #2 singles.  At #3, Beth Zilligan fell to Bethel's Marissa Mills 1-6, 2-6, and Katie Turner succumbed to Goshen's Emily Gingerich 2-6, 4-6 at #4 singles.  Dana Starks fell in straight sets to Jessica Pswarayi of Marian, losing 0-6, 2-6.

In the first round of doubles, Harness and Weber upset the number four seed of Braun and Mills of Bethel, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.  But there would be no upset in the second round, facing Dukeman and Beekman of IWU.  IWU easily won the match, 6-0, 6-1.

Zilligen and Turner were ousted from the tournament in the first round by Bethel's Yoder and Schnepp 0-6, 3-6 at #2 doubles, and Plett and Starks lost 3-6, 0-6 to Taylor's Bailin and Johnson at #3 doubles.

Tigers Trounce Foresters
10/5/02

The Foresters ran into a fired up Tiger team from Olivet Nazarene University and lost 8-1.  HC's lone win came at #2 doubles where Katie Turner and Stacy Plett teamed for the 8-2 victory.  Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber lost a heart-breaker at #1 doubles 9-8 and Stacy Plett put up a fight at #4 singles, but fell in three 3-6, 6-3, 2-6.  "We played well at some positions, but Olivet is awfully good," said Coach Turner.  "We would have had to play our best to win and we didn't today."  The women now stand at 5-6 on the season.

HC Outlasts Grace
9/28/02

The women's tennis team swept doubles and won three of the six singles matches to earn the 6-3 over Grace College.  HC's Katie Turner led the way for the Foresters as she teamed with Beth Zilligen to win 8-1 at #2 doubles, then disposed of Laura Stuckey 6-0, 6-0 in less than 45 minutes at #4 singles.  Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber won 8-0 at #1 doubles and Stacy Plett and Dana Starks held on for the 8-6 win at #3 doubles.   In singles, it was a day for three-setters as all but one match went the distance.  #2 Weber dropped her first set 3-6, then came back to take the last two 6-4, 7-5 for the win, and #5 Plett outlasted her opponent 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.  "I see improvement in each match," said Coach Turner.  "They are hitting the ball with more confidence in match situations."  The win evens the women's record at 5-5 on the season and completes their MCC season with a 2-5 record.

HC Downs Ravens
9/26/02

The Foresters hosted Anderson University in a non-conference match and came away with a 7-2 victory.  The outcome of the match was decided in singles as HC won five of the six matches.  Becky Harness (6-2, 6-3), Katie Turner (6-1, 6-1), and Stacy Plett (6-0, 6-2) each picked up easy wins, while Dana Starks had a tough two-setter (7-6, 7-5), and Lindsey Weber went three sets for the win (4-6, 6-4, 6-2).  In doubles, the Foresters took two of the three matches.  Harness and Weber combined for the 8-4 win at #1 doubles, while Kyleigh Gast and Dawn Lauer, who teamed up for the first team at #3 singles, earned the 8-6 win.  "We were stroking the ball very well today," said Coach Turner.  "Hopefully this will give us some much needed confidence as we get closer to the conference tournament."  The women improve to 4-5 on the season with the win.

Pilots Cruise Over Foresters
9/24/02

The Bethel College Pilots cruised over the Foresters with an 8-1 victory.  HC's lone win came at #2 doubles where Beth Zilligen and Katie Turner defeated Ayndrea Schnepp and Wendy Yoder 8-3.  Becky Harness came close in both her matches, but lost a three-setter in singles and fell 9-7 in doubles.  Despite the appearance of progress being made, the team continues to struggle.  "We lack confidence in our abilities," said Coach Turner.  "I see them make good shots in practice, but they struggle to make them in matches.  But I do think we are making some progress."  The women drop to 3-5 on the year and 1-5 in the conference.

Trojans Knock Off Foresters
9/21/02

A tough Taylor Trojan team rode into town and knocked off the Foresters 8-1.  HC's only win came at #2 doubles where Beth Zilligen and Katie Turner won a hard-fought battle over Renee Stoller and Leslie Davis  9-7.  A few other matches were close, but the Foresters were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.  Stacy Plett and Dana Starks fell 8-6 at #3 doubles, and Turner and Starks both lost three-setters at #4 and #6 singles.  "We're still not where we need to be, but it will come," said Coach Turner.  "I am proud of the way Beth and Katie hung in there in doubles.  They were down and came back to win."  The loss drops the women to 3-4 on the season and 1-4 in the MCC.

Foresters Shut Out St. Joseph's
9/18/02

The women's tennis team got back on track with a 9-0 win over the Pumas of St. Joseph's College.  After sweeping doubles, the women went on to dominate in singles as well with only one match going three sets.  Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber combined to get the 8-2 win at #1 doubles.  Beth Zilligen and Katie Turner won with an identical 8-2 score at #2 doubles, and Stacy Plett and Dana Starks got the 8-3 win at #3 doubles.  In singles, #1 Harness won 6-3, 6-0, and #2 Weber downed her opponent 6-4, 6-0.  At #3, Zilligen held on to win 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the longest match of the day.  Turner gave up just one game in her match, winning 6-1, 6-0, while #5 Stacy Plett won 6-3, 6-4 and #6 Dana Starks won 6-0, 6-3.  With the win, the women pull their record even at 3-3 on the season.

Goshen Downs Foresters 8-1
9/17/02

A very talented Goshen College handed the Foresters an 8-1 loss in an MCC match-up.  Stacy Plett was the lone Forester to win a match defeating Allison Miller 7-6, 6-4.  Although most of the other matches were close, HC was unable to convert any into wins.  "We are still making progress," said Coach Turner.  "Goshen is a very strong team and we played them very close.  We get better with every match."  With the loss, the women drop to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in the MCC.

HC Women Fall to Marian
9/14/02

Down 2-1 after doubles, the women's tennis team hoped to turn things around in singles, but lost four of the six matches to fall 3-6 to the Marian College Knights.  Sophomore Stacy Plett was the lone double winner for HC, teaming with  Dana Starks to win her doubles match 8-4 and defeating Paula O'Conner 6-0, 6-3 in singles.  Lindsey Weber earned HC's other point by coming from behind before her opponent retired (4-6, 6-4, 4-0 (retired)).  "We are gaining more ground than we are losing, but it is still frustrating for the girls to work so hard in practice and not come away with a win they could have had," said Coach Turner.  "We had a chance to win singles matches, we just aren't quite there yet."  The loss drops the women to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in the MCC.

IWU Shuts Out Foresters
9/10/02

The Foresters  ran into a buzz saw losing 9-0 to defending MCC and NAIA Region VIII champion, Indiana Wesleyan.  The Wildcats handled the Foresters easily winning each of the six singles in straight sets.  The closest match of the day came at #1 doubles where HC's Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber fell 8-4.  "We were intimidated when we stepped out of the van," said Coach Turner.  "We went away from most things we have been working on.  It was a setback, but hopefully we can learn from the experience."  With the loss, the Foresters fall to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the MCC.

Foresters Smash St. Francis
9/7/02

The women's tennis team traveled to St. Francis for their first conference match of the year and came away with an 8-1 victory.   After winning five of the six singles matches, the Foresters left no doubt as to who the better team was, winning all three doubles matches as well.  Singles winners included #1 Becky Harness (6-4, 6-3), #3 Beth Zilligen (6-0, 6-3), #4 Katie Turner (6-1, 6-1), #5 Stacy Plett (6-3, 6-2), and #6 Dana Starks (6-2, 1-6, 6-0).  Harness and Lindsey Weber paired up for the 8-2 win at #1 doubles, Zilligen and Turner also got the 8-2 win at #2 doubles, and Plett and Starks won 8-4 at #3 doubles.  "We were a little nervous after Thursday's match, but we settled down pretty quickly and became more confident as the match wore on," said Coach Turner.  "We were even able to work on some more aggressive shots in doubles since the match was decided after singles."  The win raises the women's record to 2-0 and 1-0 in the MCC.

Foresters Handle Tri-State
9/5/02

Playing in their first dual match of the season, the women's tennis team got contributions from each player to get the 7-2 win over Tri-State University.  Stacy Plett, Dana Starks, and Katie Turner were victorious in both singles and doubles, while Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber responded with identical 6-3, 6-4 wins at #1 and #2 singles after losing at #1 doubles.  "This is a much improved team over last year," said Coach Turner.  "I think their skills have improved significantly because of their hard work.  It will be fun to watch as they get further into the season."  With the win, the women are 1-0 on the season.

HC Women 4th At Manchester

The women's tennis team opened its season with a fourth place finish at the eight-team Manchester College doubles tournament.  The #3 doubles team of Stacy Plett and Hannah Fairchild reached the finals with wins over Anderson (7-6, 6-3) and Tri-State (6-7, 6-4, 10-7) before falling to Taylor (6-1, 6-1) in the championship match.  Becky Harness and Lindsey Weber finished 6th at #1 doubles with a loss to Goshen (7-5, 4-6, 4-10), a win over Anderson (8-2) and a loss to Franklin (7-9).
