With the match even at 3-3 after singles play, the Foresters won just one doubles match and fell 5-4 to Franklin College.  The surprise match of the day came at #2 singles where Katie Turner won a close match against Abby Vanderoffer, 7-5, 6-4.  Trailing early in the match, Turner came back strong against the hard-hitting Vanderoffer. Also winning singles matches for HC were Jordan Miller at #6 and Lindsey Weber at #3.  Miller’s match lasted about 45 minutes as she easily defeated Laura Duerstock 6-1, 6-1.  Weber struggled early in her match and lost the first set 6-2 against Leslie McAleese.  But Weber bounced back to win the second 6-1.  In the third set Weber trailed 5-2, but rallied to win the next five games and take the match.  “I was very proud of Katie today,” said Coach Turner.  “She showed a lot of heart."  The women conclude their regular season with a 5-6 record overall.  Their 4-3 conference record gave them a fourth place finish in the regular season standings.  The women will compete in the Mid-Central Conference tournament October 9-11.

Goshen Topples HC

At #5, Zilligen outlasted Katie Beck for the 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win.  “Lindsey is finally getting her stroke back after being gone all summer,” said Coach Turner.  “She easily defeated a solid opponent.  She should do well in the MCC tournament.”  With the loss, the women conclude the conference regular season with a 4-3 record and stand at 5-5 on the for the year.

Foresters Win Another Close One
9/25/03

The women’s tennis team also defeated Anderson University, hanging on for their fourth 5-4 win of the season.  This one was a little tougher to pull off with #1 player, Becky Harness, sidelined with an injury.  Even with each player having to move up a spot in singles and with the doubles partners switched around, the Foresters still managed to take two of the three doubles matches and pick up three singles wins to secure the team victory.  “They all handled the pressure very well,” said Turner.  “Moving up a spot can sometimes shake you up, but they rose to the occasion.”  Lindsey Weber, Stacy Plett, and Jordan Miller all were double winners on the day. Weber and Plett teamed for the 9-7 win at #2 doubles and Miller and Kyleigh Gast got the 8-5 win at #3 doubles.  In singles play, Weber recorded the 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 singles, Plett won 7-5, 6-2 at #3, and Miller knocked off her opponent 6-3, 6-0 at #6.  "Lindsey probably played one of the best matches of her career,” added Turner.  “She did a great job.”  With the win, the women move to 5-4 on the season.

Lineup Changes Spur Foresters
9/23/03

The women’s tennis team moved to 4-2 in the Mid-Central Conference and 4-4 overall with their 5-4 win over Bethel College.  Leading the way for the Foresters was Becky Harness with a pair of wins.  Teaming with Katie Turner at #1 doubles, they defeated Robin Braun and Mindy Clark 8-6.  In singles, it was all Harness as she took an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Braun.  “Becky had a good day,” said Coach Turner.  “She played with a new partner, then came through with a big win for us.”  After the Foresters poor performance in doubles last Saturday, Coach Turner decided to change all three doubles teams and it paid off.  HC won two of three doubles to have the advantage going into singles play.  Other singles winners were Beth Zilligen (6-1, 6-2) at #5 and Jordan Miller (6-4, 6-4) at #6.  “Our doubles teams haven’t been playing very well and I thought we needed to shake things up,” said Turner.  “When you play doubles first, you have to win one or two and gain some confidence going into singles play.  We did that today.”

Taylor Knocks Off HC
9/20/03

The Foresters had upset on their minds, but the Trojans of Taylor University proved too strong, knocking off HC 7-2.  Taylor swept the doubles to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the match and the Foresters weren't able to recover in singles play.  Beth Zilligen (6-4, 6-0) and Jordan Miller (4-6, 7-6, 6-1) recorded HC's only wins on the day at #5 and #6 singles respectively.  "Beth and Jordan did great," said Coach Turner.  "Both gained a lot of confidence in themselves and what they are capable of doing."  The women fall to 3-4 on the year and are now 3-2 in the MCC.

Foresters Hang on for Win
9/16/03

After sweeping doubles, the Foresters had to hang on to pick up the 5-4 win over Grace College.  Becky Harness (6-0, 6-2) and Stacy Plett (6-0, 6-3) both came through with straight set wins in singles to secure the win for HC.  "Becky was the last one to go on and I told her that her match may decide the team match," said Coach Turner.  "She handled the pressure very well."  In doubles, Harness and Beth Zilligen won 8-6 at #1, Katie Turner and Lindsey Weber outlasted their opponents 8-7 at #2 , and Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast cruised to the 8-2 win at #3 doubles.  The win evens the women's  season record at 3-3 and gives them a 3-1 record in the MCC.

IWU Handles HC
9/13/03

A very talented Indiana Wesleyan University squad easily handled the Foresters grabbing the 8-1 win.  HC's Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast picked up the team's only victory with their 8-3 win over Alaina Townsend and Laura Becksvoort at #3 doubles.  Lindsey Weber had the best performance in singles play for HC.  She took Erin Carrel to three sets, but fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.  With the loss, the women fall to 2-3 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
