2004-05 Season Summary

Foresters Sixth in MCC Tournament
10/8/04

The Foresters brought their fall season to a close with a sixth place finish in the MCC Conference Tournament.  Indiana Wesleyan University repeated as tournament champions.  Kyleigh Gast, who had advanced to the semi-finals at #3 singles, was ousted from the tournament 6-0, 6-1 by IWU's Sarah Bauss, and Taylor University's Kelly Pence knocked out Jessica Deter 6-0, 6-2 at #4 singles.  “For being such an inexperienced team, I felt we did as well as could be expected,” said Coach Turner.  “With a good recruiting year, we should be fine for next year.”

Three Foresters Advance
10/7/04

Three Foresters secured first round wins in the women's MCC tennis tournament.  Number 1 Ashley Counts (6-4, 6-4) and #4 Jessica Deter (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) both picked up wins in their opening singles matches and teamed to win their first doubles match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Spring Arbor University at #2 doubles.  The two lost their second doubles match 6-1, 6-1 to Marian College.  Deter's win in singles advanced her to today's semi-final, while Counts fell 6-1, 6-3 to Goshen's Sarah Yoder in her second singles match.  Kyleigh Gast picked up the Foresters' third win knocking off Marian College's Katrina Kroics 6-3, 7-6 (4) at #3 singles.  In other first round matches, #2 Stacy Plett (6-0, 6-2), #5 Dawn Lauer (6-1, 6-3), and #6 Rachael Boersma (7-5, 6-3) each fell in straight sets.  Plett and Gast lost 6-2, 6-1 to Taylor University at #1 doubles and Lauer and Boersma fell 6-0, 6-3 to Bethel College at #3 doubles.

Foresters Come Up Short
10/2/04

The women’s tennis team again failed to capitalize in close matches and came up on the short end, losing 7-2 to Franklin College.  HC lost two three set matches in singles and fell 8-5 and 8-6 at #2 and #3 doubles respectively.  The Foresters picked up their two wins at #4 singles, where Jessica Deter outlasted Laura Durstolk 7-5, 7-5, and at #1 doubles, where Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast won 8-6.  "This was a close match that could have gone either way," said Coach Turner.  "We just couldn't come up with the big points when we needed them."  With the loss, the women wrap up their regular season with a 4-8 record.

Foresters Miss Opportunity
9/28/04

The women’s tennis team had their chances, but couldn’t convert and dropped a 6-3 decision to Marian College.  Playing doubles first, the Foresters could only muster a win in one of the three matches, an 8-4 victory by Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast at #1.  In singles, Gast (6-1, 6-2) and Jessica Deter (6-4, 6-1) won easily at #3 and #4 respectively.  The closest matches of the day came at #2 and #6 singles where Stacy Plett (6-3, 6-7, 1-6) and Rachael Boersma (4-6, 6-3, 3-6) dropped three-setters.  “I was really disappointed in our doubles play,” said Coach Turner.  “We really lacked intensity.  Had we played better, we would have used that momentum to win the match.”  The women drop to 4-7 on the season and conclude the MCC regular season with a 2-6 record.

Foresters Too Much For SAU
9/25/04

A short-handed Spring Arbor University squad was no match for the Foresters as HC knocked off the Cougars 7-2.  The Foresters picked up two wins before the match even started as Spring Arbor had only five women available to play.  HC started things off with two wins in doubles, an 8-6 win by Stacy Plett and Kyleigh Gast at #1 and a forfeit at #3.  In singles play, Ashley Counts topped Kristen Perry 6-3, 6-4 at #1.  Gast picked up her second victory of the match at #3 with a 6-2, 6-1 win.  Jessica Deter won 6-3, 6-2 at #4, and Dawn Lauer won in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-1) at #5.  HC’s Rachael Boersma received the Foresters’ second forfeit win at #6 singles.  “The girls played with more confidence today,” said Coach Turner.  “Being so young, it is nice to see some wins from their hard work in practice.”  With the win, the Foresters improve to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Foresters Cruise Past Defiance
9/23/04

The women’s tennis team got back on the winning track with a 7-2 victory on the road over Defiance College. The Foresters took two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to seal the win.  Double winners for HC were Ashley Counts, Jessica Deter, and Dawn Lauer. Counts cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at #1 singles and teamed with Deter for the 8-4 win at #2 doubles. Deter then gave up just one game to win in straight sets at #4 singles.  Lauer won 6-3, 6-1 at #5 singles and picked up an 8-4 win at #3 doubles with partner Rachael Boersma.  Other winners in the match were Stacy Plett (6-2, 6-2) at #2 singles and Kyleigh Gast (6-3, 6-4) at #3 singles.  “I was a little apprehensive going in today,” said Coach  Turner.  “We have been struggling with our confidence lately, but we stayed pretty focused today.  I was especially pleased with Ashley.  She played her best tennis of the season.”  The win moves the Foresters to 3-6 on the year.

Foresters Fall to Bethel
9/21/04

Jessica Deter and Kyleigh Gast picked up the Foresters' only wins in their 7-2 loss to a solid Bethel College squad.  Gast needed three sets to defeat Jessica Herbster 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 at #3 singles and Deter knocked off Julianne Houston in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at #4 singles.  “Jessica was so steady today," said Coach Turner.  "She kept Julianne on the baseline most of the day.  Kyleigh picked up a nice 3-setter.  It was the last match of the day and she hung in there and just kept stroking after dropping the second set.”  The loss drops the women to 2-6 on the year and 1-5 in the MCC.

IWU Hands HC 2nd Straight Sweep
9/18/04

For the second match in a row, the Foresters were swept 9-0, this time by the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats.  By the end of the match, the Foresters had won just nine games total.  Ashley Counts and Jessica Deter managed to take two games from the Wildcats at #2 doubles in the closest match of the day.  With the loss, the Foresters fall to 2-5 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

Goshen Shuts Out HC
9/11/04

The Goshen College Maple Leafs showed their depth with a 9-0 shut out over the Foresters.  Goshen dominated the day giving up just one set when Dawn Lauer took the first set off of Liz Goering before dropping the last two 6-1, 6-0 at #5 singles.  “I really thought we would have a closer match,” said Coach Turner. “Goshen is a solid team, but I am disappointed that we didn’t have more intensity in our singles matches.”  The women fall to 2-4 on the season and 1-3 in the MCC.

Taylor Dominates HC
9/11/04

HC's Jessica Deter came up with the lone Forester win against a talented Taylor University squad.  The Trojans gave up just three games in the three doubles matches and won their five singles matches in straight sets. Deter, the lone bright spot for HC, had a very decisive win at #4 singles, beating Kristine Bolinger 6-0, 6-2.  With the loss, the women fall to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in the MCC.

HC Falls Prey to Ravens
9/9/04

The Foresters came up short against the Anderson University Ravens losing 6-3.  All three HC points came from the middle of the lineup.  Kyleigh Gast remained undefeated on the season at #3 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Michelle Deal.  At #4 singles, Jessica Deter took little time in disposing of Amanda Norvill, 6-2, 6-1.  The Foresters other point came when Gast and Deter teamed up to win their #2 doubles match in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-4). “Outside of our wins, we didn’t play very well today,” said Coach Turner.  “We seemed to be hitting balls everywhere, but into the court.  But, I was extremely proud of the way Kyleigh and Jessica played.”  The loss drops the women to 2-2 on the season.

HC Wins Another Close One
9/8/04

The women’s tennis team traveled to Hanover College and defeated the Panthers 5-4 on a blustery day.  Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Foresters rallied to take four of the singles matches.  Oddly enough, the only double winner on the day was junior Dawn Lauer who teamed with Rachael Boersma to win 8-1 at #3 doubles, then defeated Angela DiGeronimo, 6-3, 6-0. Kyleigh Gast remained undefeated with her 7-6 6-2 victory at #3 singles. The match of the day came at #2 singles where Stacy Plett, trailing 5-2 in the first set, reeled off nine straight games to defeat Megan Parrot 7-5, 6-2. “I was very pleased with the way we played today,” said Coach Turner.  “The wind was swirling, but we handled it well.  I am especially proud of the way Stacy pulled her match out.”  With the win, the Foresters move to 2-1 on the season.

Foresters Pick Up First Win
9/4/04

The women’s tennis team bounced back from a tough loss to Grace College and knocked off the University of St. Francis Cougars 5-4.  With the singles matches completed, the score was 3-3.  The Foresters just missed a sweep of the doubles with the #1 doubles team of Stacy Plett and Ashley Counts losing in a tie-breaker.  The Foresters had three double winners on the day.  Kyleigh Gast won 6-3, 6-4 at #3 singles, Jessica Deter came from behind to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at #4 singles, and Dawn Lauer went 6-1, 6-3 for the win at #5 singles.  Gast and Deter teamed for the 8-6 win at #2 doubles and Lauer and Rachael Boersma won with an identical score at #3 doubles.  “We played pretty consistently today,” said Coach Turner.  “Jessica (Deter) really came through for us because she had to pull out a tough three-setter.  I am pretty pleased with the way we played.”  The Foresters are now 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in MCC play.

Foresters Drop Close One To Grace
9/2/04

The women’s tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 loss to Grace College in their first conference match of the season.  Leading 2-1 after doubles, the Foresters could only come up with two singles victories.  Doubles winners were Kyleigh Gast and Jessica Deter at #2 (8-1) and Dawn Lauer and Rachael Boersma at #3 (8-2).  Singles winners were Stacy Plett at #2 (6-3, 6-4) and Kyleigh Gast at #3 (6-4, 4-6, 6-0).  "Our youth was evident today,” said Coach Turner.  “As they get more match experience, we will definitely be a better team.”
