Skinner,
Priest to address class of 2007
Huntington
University will hold its 109th commencement exercises on
May 19. Dr. Wayne Priest, Huntington University associate professor
of psychology, will deliver the baccalaureate address to graduates
and their parents at 10:30 a.m. in the Zurcher Auditorium of the
Merillat Centre for the Arts. The annual commencement address, held
on the campus front lawn at 3 p.m., will be given by the Rev. Roger
L. Skinner, USA executive director of OMS International. The public
is invited to attend the commencement service.

Honorary degree
recipients announced
Huntington University
will award four honorary degrees at its 2007 Commencement Exercises
on May 19. The exercises will begin at 3 p.m. A Doctor of Divinity
degree will be awarded to the Rev. Roger L. Skinner, USA executive
director of OMS International. Mr. Homer F. and Mrs. Marjorie L.
Hiner each will receive a Doctor of Commercial Science. Mr. Hiner
served as the CEO and president of Hiner Transport, Inc., from 1967
to 1999 while Mrs. Hiner was the owner and CFO of the company from
1972 to 1999. The Doctor of Humane Letters degree will be awarded to
Dr. Carol A. Clark who practices obstetrics and gynecology in
Anderson, Ind.

Design
concept approved for residence hall
The
Huntington University Board of Trustees approved the design concept
for an additional residence hall and authorized the development of
architectural documents at meetings held April 19-20. Over the
summer, as enrollment data is gained, the board’s executive
committee will make the final decision as to when to begin
construction. The impact of the new nursing major will factor into
the process.

Forum to
feature five mayoral candidates
Huntington County
Leadership, the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce and Huntington
University’s Department of History will host a forum featuring
mayoral candidates at 6:30 p.m. on May 1 in the Zurcher Auditorium
of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on the university’s campus.
The event is free
and open to the public. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Alpha Chi
announces achievements, activities
The Indiana Beta
chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society has been active this
spring. Among other achievements and activities, the Huntington
University chapter was recognized at the National Convention of
Alpha Chi in San Antonio, March 22-24, as a Star Chapter of Alpha
Chi for its activities and programming. Huntington is now one of
only five that have received the Star Chapter award every year it
was begun in 1996.

Mathematics
competition yields six winners
Wednesday,
Huntington University held its first annual
Middle Grades
Mathematics Competition. There were 15 four-member teams from
area schools in Indiana and Ohio. The competition was run by
Huntington University freshman Joshua Fitzgerald who served as
student coordinator alongside supervising professor, Dr. Patrick
Eggleton, associate professor of mathematics. Fitzgerald is a
mathematics education major from New Haven, Ind. Students began with
a 20 multiple-choice question written test, followed by a
quick-response individual round. After lunch, the teams worked
together on one final round of questions before top honors were
awarded to the three best teams and three best individuals.

National
Day of Prayer is May 3
The city of Huntington will commemorate the National Day of Prayer
with a prayer time at noon in the rotunda of the Huntington County
Courthouse. The event is open to the public. For more information,

Felker
Jones publishes essay
Dr. Beth Felker
Jones, assistant professor of Bible and religion, has had an essay
published in the new issue of the Christian Century:
“Spanking away sin: Christian child
abuse,” The Christian Century, May 1, 2007, 8-9.
Urschel presents paper
Dr.
Linda Urschel, professor of English, attended the
national meeting of the College English Association in
New Orleans on April 11-14. She presented a paper titled
“Playing by the Rules: The Ethics of Detective Fiction”
at the conference in keeping with the overall theme of
ethics and empathy in writing and literature.
