University hosts fourth graders from Lincoln
Prof. Susie Burson, instructor in education, recently organized a
variety of activities on the Huntington University campus for fourth
graders from Lincoln Elementary School.
Prof. Mike Burnett, assistant professor of
theatre arts, and theatre students performed for the group. Mrs.
Kay Schwob, director of the Enterprise Resource Center,
talked to the students about college and careers. Alex Kock, a
senior physical education major from Auburn, Ind., spoke about
university life and how good grades and sports can help students
gain admission to college. In addition, the fourth graders watched
chemistry and physics demonstrations in Hiner Hall. The
demonstrations were done by four Huntington students – Alicia
Hoffmann, Ashley Meyer, Kelly Hotopp and Jeremy Burkett – and Dr.
Bill Bordeaux, professor of chemistry. The Admissions staff also
provided campus tours, and sack lunches were eaten in the Habecker
Dining Commons.
Huntington
alumna appears as coauthor
Huntington University alumna Kelli (Whiteman) Sorg, a 2003 graduate
with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and biology, appears as a
coauthor on a paper about a protein folding mechanism published in
the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. While
she was a student at Huntington University, she assisted in the
published project in the summer of 2002 at Notre Dame. Sorg is
currently at the Indiana University School of Medicine working
toward a career in internal medicine – pediatrics.
Evans, students conduct informal survey
During
the last week of April, Dr. Bruce Evans, professor of biology, took
one of his non-majors lab sections and did an informal survey of the
campus looking for emerald ash borers. While it was a little early
in the season to do so, the group could find no evidence of the
critters. Evans rechecked two of the trees at the end of May and
still found no ash borers. For more information about ash borers,
