Campbell
honored as Staff Member of Year

Huntington University
held its annual appreciation dinner for faculty and staff May 8.
Many campus community members were recognized for their service
to the university, while Gary Campbell was honored with the
Staff Member of the Year award.
Campbell, the university’s director of technology services, was nominated
by faculty and staff and chosen by the Senior Leadership Team as
the Staff Member of the Year. He has served the university for
six years and before receiving the award, President G. Blair
Dowden, Ph.D., recognized him for his servant’s heart, his
management skills, and his willingness to go above and beyond to
meet the technical needs of the university.

CCNE accepts nursing program's
initial report
The
Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education has accepted the initial
report from Huntington University’s
nursing program.
CCNE is an independent accrediting agency recognized by the U.S.
Secretary of Education as a national accreditation agency. CCNE
assesses baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs.
The acceptance of the initial report by CCNE is the first
step in beginning the national accreditation process. Huntington
University’s Department of Nursing now will prepare and submit a
self-study report in the fall of 2010. CCNE will send a team for a
site visit that same semester.

Forester Night recognizes students,
faculty
The
37th Annual Forester Night was held May 6 in the Zurcher
Auditorium of the Huntington University Merillat Centre for the
Arts. Foresters of the Year, Alpha Chi honor society’s Outstanding
Scholar of the Year Award, and the Outstanding Senior Awards from
various academic departments were all given to several Huntington
University graduating seniors. Foresters of the Year are voted on by
the Huntington University student body.

Alpha Chi presents Sophomore Honor Awards
The
Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi National Scholarship Honor Society
presented five students at Huntington University with the 2008
Sophomore Honor Award on May 4.
They were
recognized as the top students in their class at a reception hosted
by the president of the university, Dr. G. Blair Dowden, at his
home. The Indiana Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi at Huntington University
is one of the top 10 chapters nationally of Alpha Chi’s some 300
chapters and was national chapter of the year in 2001.

HU to host
Digital Media Arts Showcase
Huntington University’s
Department of
Communication and the
digital media
arts program invite the public to attend their Digital
Media Arts Showcase. The latest in student and faculty productions
will be exhibited. The evening of animations, live action, stop
motion, music videos and more will begin at 7 p.m. in the Zurcher
Auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts on May 13.
There is no charge
for admission.

Education
Department awards scholarships
The
Education
Department of Huntington University has selected the
recipients of the
Betty A. Brown
and Donald and Leora Ackerman Teacher Education Scholarship
for the 2008-2009 academic year. Cassie Rudy, Krista Warner and
Kaicy Guthrie, all seniors in the fall of 2008, will receive $1,000
scholarship awards. Rudy is an elementary and special education
major from Huntington, Ind. Warner is an elementary education major
from Huntington, Ind. Guthrie is an elementary education major from
Roanoke, Ind.
This scholarship
was established in 2002 to honor the memory of these exemplary
teachers.

Trio wins
science, mathematical scholarships
Natalie Brown,
Brandon Gray and Kelsey Green, incoming freshmen, will receive the
Huntington University Natural and Mathematical Sciences Scholarship.
To be eligible for the Natural and Mathematical Sciences
Scholarship, a prospective student must file an application for
admission and attend a visit day at Huntington University.

What does it mean

Michelson publishes article
Dr.
Paul Michelson’s article on “Area and Romanian Studies
in an Era of Transition and Change,” has been published
in Marina Cap-Bun, ed., Studiile Romanesti în lume în
2007/Romanian Studies Around the World in 2007 (Bucuresti:
Cartea Universitara, 2007), pp. 149-166. Appearing under
the auspices of the Romanian National University
Research Council, the volume is a comprehensive survey
of Romanian studies across the globe.
Holtrop,
Upchurch present sessions
Dr. Steve
Holtrop, associate dean for graduate and adult education, and Dr.
Rick Upchurch, director of EXCEL Adult Degree Programs, presented in
different sessions at the annual conference of the Higher Learning
Commission of the North Central Association on April 13-14. Holtrop
presented as part of a team on the subject: “Benchmarking Adult
Student Learning Outcomes.” Upchurch presented on “Maintaining and
Expanding a Successful Degree Completion Program.” The HLC is the
regional accrediting body through which Huntington University is
accredited. The HLC’s annual conference in Chicago draws thousands
of participants each year from its member institutions and offers
workshops on a variety of topics in several tracks to assist higher
education administrators.
Michelson publishes
articles
Dr. Paul Michelson,
distinguished professor of history, recently published two
articles. The first, titled "Hrisovul, 1941-1947: Scholarship
in a Time of Crisis," Revista Arhivelor, Vol. 84 (2007), Nr.
3-4, pp. 235-248, discusses the history, contents and contributions
of the Romanian archival journal Hrisovul, which was
published during World War II and after ceasing with the Communist
takeover of Romania. Revista Arhivelor is the journal of the
National Archives of Romania. His second article was "The Historical
Movement of the 19th Century and Some Considerations on the
Development of Romanian Historiography," published in the Revue
des Etudes Sud-Est Europeenes, Vol. 45 (2007), pp. 307-314. This
study is part of his ongoing history of Romanian historiography from
1880 to 1947.
