Awareness week features panel, prayer vigil

Huntington
University is commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a
week-long observance that began Wednesday and will go through Oct
24. A panel discussion about the effects of breast cancer will be
held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 22 in Hiner Hall of the Science Hall.
A luminary lighting and prayer vigil will be take place at 8 p.m.
Oct. 24 on the central mall.

Theatre company to
present 'Little Women'
The
Huntington University Theatre Company
will present “Little Women: The Musical” at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1-2
and 8-9 and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 and 10 in the Studio
Theatre of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. Tickets are $12 for
general admission, $10 for students and seniors, $6 for children 13
and younger, $5 for Huntington University students, and $9 for
Huntington University faculty and staff. For tickets or more

Student
participates in math research project
Alicia
Hoffmann, a senior at Huntington University, spent the summer in
Buffalo, N.Y., participating in a research assignment through
Canisius College. Hoffmann, a
mathematics major from Fort
Wayne, Ind., spent eight weeks doing mathematical research through
the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for
Undergraduates. The program she was a part of was Geometry and
Physics on Graphs, with an emphasis on fullerene graphs.

Group
visits 'Shakespeare Behind Bars'
On Oct. 18, Dr.
Jack Heller, Prof. Carla MacDonald and Kathy Rhodes took a group of
11 Huntington University students to Luther Luckett Correctional
Complex in LaGrange, Ky., to observe a rehearsal of the theatrical
organization Shakespeare Behind Bars. Shakespeare Behind Bars is
a program of the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, and the only
North American Shakespeare Company contained within the walls of a
medium-security adult male prison.

Student
faces cultural barriers through PRIME
In
a small room, on the other side of the ghetto, in Roanoke, Va.,
Huntington University student Megan Condry sits beside two middle
school girls, who meet every weekly to do their daily devotions
together. As they are reading through the Bible, one of the girls
asks Condry a tough question. The question compels Condry to go
deeper into what Scripture says to respond to her question.
“My time is
not my own, and my worries seem to fade away as I fellowship and
encourage them,” said Condry, a senior
family and children’s ministries major
from Celina, Ohio. “They have opened my eyes to many things and
challenged me.”

Community
invited to join 'Messiah' rehearsals
The Huntington
University Concert Choir invites the community to join its members
as they combine with the Huntington University Orchestra and begin
to rehearse for their 53rd annual performance of Handel’s
“Messiah.” The performance will be 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 at St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntington. The public is invited to join
the choir in their practices. Rehearsals will be held at the
Merillat Centre for the Arts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 and 29
and Nov. 5, 19 and 26 with a dress rehearsal on Dec. 1 from 1:30 to
4:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Huntington
University to host Parent Weekend
Huntington University
will host Parent Weekend on Nov. 2-3. The event invites parents and
guardians to attend class with their child, meet other parents and
guardians at an ice cream show and talent show, participate in a 5K
walk/run, play disc golf, or explore campus through a scavenger
hunt. Guests also are encouraged to attend the Parent Association
luncheon and the Huntington University Theatre Company’s
presentation of “Little Women: The Musical.” During the luncheon,
the Mother of the Year and Father of the Year awards will be
presented. The winners were nominated by their children and selected
by the Huntington University Parent Council.
“Parent Weekend is
a time to spend time with their child on campus, get to know other
parents, and experience a bit of campus life,” said Pete Schownir,
Parent Association director.

Doughty
participates in seminar
Dr. Del Doughty,
associate professor of English, participated in the “Teaching the
Great Books” seminar at the annual meeting of the Association of
Literary Scholars and Critics” held at the Allegro Hotel in Chicago
from Oct. 12-14. The title of Doughty’s paper, “Who Needs Scientists
When There’s a Poet Around? What ‘Moby-Dick’ Tells Us That the
Pharmaceutical Companies Don’t Want Us to Know.”
McPherren publishes essay
An essay written by
Dr. Ann McPherren, vice president for university planning and
strategy, has been published in this month’s issue of University
Business. The October edition’s feature is “the state of higher
education.” Several essays by higher education leaders are in the
issue. McPherren’s article, titled “The Commodity Market and the
University Education,” may be found at
www.universitybusiness.com.
Bergler teaches course at
meeting
Dr. Tom Bergler,
associate professor of ministry and missions, taught a course on the
topic of “Influencing Student Culture at State Universities” as part
of the Campus Outreach Academy sponsored by University Christian
Outreach in Ann Arbor, Mich., Aug. 6-10. The conference brought
together student leaders from campus ministries at 6 different
universities.
Bergler also published “We’re All Adolescents Now” in the
September/October 2007 issue of Youthworker Journal.
Auxiliary to hold garage
sale
The Huntington
University Women’s Auxiliary 18th annual garage sale benefit for
Miller and Meadows halls’ lounges will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct.
19 and 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 20 at the university’s Maintenance
Building on the corner of Fruit and Himes streets.
