Huntington honors Merillat Scholars
Huntington University
honored the 178 Merillat Scholars at a dinner held Nov. 6 in the
upper level of Habecker Dining Commons. The founders of the
scholarship were represented by Mrs. Ruth Merillat of Adrian, Mich.,
and her son Mr. Richard Merillat of Naples, Fla.
The Merillat Scholar
award is a scholarship primarily for United Brethren in Christ
Church members or children of Huntington University alumni or
students involved in Youth for Christ in high school at the Student
Leader level. Since the Merillat Scholar award began in the
fall of 1994, almost $10 million has been given to more than 1,000
students. The first Merillat class consisted of 29 recipients.

Smith to present book at
fall colloquium
Huntington University’s
RichLyn Library will host Dr. Timothy O. Smith, assistant professor
of
history, for the fall “Focus
on Excellence” colloquium. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on
Nov. 19 in the Johnson Conference Room of the library. Admission is
free, and light refreshments will be served. Smith will present his
new book titled “Britain and the Origins of the Vietnam War:
UK Policy in Indo-China, 1943-50.”
A question-and-answer session will follow his lecture.

names Mother, Father of the Year
Huntington University
announced the Mother and Father of the Year awards at a luncheon
during Parent Weekend, Nov. 2-3. The winners were nominated by their
children and selected by the Huntington University Parent Council.
Dr. G. Blair
Dowden, president, presented the recipients with plaques.
The Mother of the
Year is Karen Garman of Angola, Ind., nominated by her daughter
Erica (Garman) Barrows. The Father of the Year is Larry Pryor from
Indianapolis, Ind., nominated by his daughter, Lindsay Pryor.

Nursing,
health departments offer flu shots
The
Huntington University
Department of Nursing, in
collaboration with the Huntington County Health Department, offered
flu shots to faculty, staff, students and the public on Nov. 6.
Shots were given to
59 adults and eight children in the lower level of the Science Hall
in the main nursing lab.
Nursing students
staffed the registration table while Margaret Winter, the
university’s director of nursing; Dr. Patricia Pierce, assistant
director of nursing; and Tami Berlier, the health department’s
public health nurse, administered the shots.

Choirs to
gather for 'Choral Masterworks'
The
choirs of Huntington University, Huntington North High School, Ben
Davis High School from Indianapolis, and the Huntington University
Orchestra will be featured in an inspirational night of music titled
“Choral Masterworks” on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The program will feature
sacred choral literature by Beethoven, Brahms, Hand, Mozart and
Schubert’s “Mass in G.” For ticket information at the Merillat
Centre for the Arts, call the box office at (260) 359-4261 Monday
through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets will be $5 general
admission and $3 for students, seniors and Huntington University
faculty and staff.

Judy, Hale
to perform in senior recital
The
Huntington University
Music Department will present
a combined senior recital by soprano Kara Judy and clarinetist Beth
Hale on Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The recital is to be held in the
Zurcher Auditorium at the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The recital
is free, and the public is invited. Kara Judy is a senior church
music major at Huntington University from Pierceton, Ind. Beth Hale,
a senior at Huntington University and a native of Brooklyn, Mich.,
is working toward a Bachelor of Music degree in instrumental music
education, with an emphasis in clarinet.

Cochran,
Brautigam given Peer Awards
Recipients of
the Huntington University Peer Award for
the month of November are
Barry Cochran and Dr. Dwight Brautigam. Jean Michelson, circulation
coordinator for the
RichLyn Library, passed the
Peer Award to Barry Cochran. Cochran is director of
campus police and has been
with the university for 13 years. Jim O’Donnell, associate professor
of
business and
executive-in-residence, passed the Peer Award to Dr. Dwight
Brautigam. Brautigam is professor of
history and has been with HU
for 20 years.

Dr. Edwin Tait
Bergler
teaches seminar
On Oct. 27, Dr. Tom
Bergler, associate director of the Link Institute for Faithful and
Effective Youth Ministry, taught a half-day seminar titled “Facebook
or Face to Face? The Impact of Communication Technologies on
Christian Family Life” to a group of parents and teenagers from The
Word of Life Community in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Michelson to give keynote
address
Dr.
Paul Michelson, distinguished professor of history, has been invited
to give the keynote address at an international conference on
“History and Collective Memory in Southeastern Europe: Dilemmas of
Political Discourse and Their Implications,” sponsored by the
International Free University of Moldova and the Soros-Moldova
Foundation in Chisinau, Moldova, Nov. 22-23. The title of his paper
will be “Collective Memory, Collective Amnesia, and
Post-Communism.” Part of his research on this topic has been
published as “Educatia civica in Europa de Est: Cateva repere,” in
Victor Barsan, ed., Educatie pentru Europa (Bucuresti, 1997);
“Post-Communist Romania: A Dysfunctional Society in Transition,” in
Adrian-Paul Iliescu, ed., Mentalitati si institutii. Carente
de mentalitate si inapoiere institutionala in Romania moderna (Bucuresti,
2002, in collaboration with Jean T. Michelson); and “Despre
viitorul trecutului recent al Romaniei,” Politica externa
comunista si exil anticomunist/Anuarul Institutului Roman de Istorie
Recenta, Vol. 2 (2004). Michelson has been a three-time Fulbright
grantee to Romania and serves as the president of the Society for
Romanian Studies.
Students present papers
Drs. Bobbi Buchholz, Francis Jones and Win Wetherbee
as well as students Ethan Blocher-Smith, Alicia Hoffmann,
Ashley Meyer and Joshua Zinnel attended the 35th Annual Miami
University Mathematics Conference at Oxford, Ohio, on Sept.
28-29. This year’s theme was number theory. Hoffman presented
a paper “Finite vs. Infinite Fullerenes and the Ihara
Zeta Function,” and Meyer presented a paper “Effective
Condition Number” in the student papers session.
