Lilly Endowment awards grant to
Huntington
Lilly
Endowment Inc. has awarded a $375,000 grant to Huntington University
to sustain the university’s Enterprise Resource Center and expand
career development diagnostics and techniques to assist students to
focus on their major. “We are grateful for Lilly Endowment’s support
of experiential learning opportunities for Huntington University
students,” said Kay Schwob, director of the Enterprise Resource
Center. “The ERC allows us to focus energy and attention on
experiential learning. Without Lilly Endowment funding, the
university couldn’t offer as many experiential learning
opportunities as it does. We’re touching students at their freshman,
sophomore, junior and senior years.”

EXCEL program to offer classes
in Fort Wayne
In
February, the Huntington University EXCEL
Adult Degree Programs will begin offering classes in Fort
Wayne, Ind., adding a fourth location to the program’s sites which
currently include Huntington, Columbia City and Wabash. Classes will
take place at the ExecuTrain building on 7337 W. Jefferson Blvd.,
offering one associate and four bachelor’s degrees programs. The
associate group will start on Feb. 9 and the bachelor’s on Feb. 25.

200 frogs invade
Huntington's campus
Approximately
200 frogs have invaded the Huntington University campus. Twenty
students in an animation course created the frogs out of foam core
and steel wire for a project inspired by a
commercial for Sony’s Bravia® high-definition TV. The commercial
features rabbits formed out of a clay-like substance overrunning a
city. The project came out of the university’s
digital media arts program. The course title is “Animation II:
Advanced Traditional Media,” and the purpose is to give students “an
immersive experience in stop-motion animation and drawn animation.”

Venture Works awards $10,000 cash prize
Venture
Works
named Alternative Fuel Solutions the $10,000 winner of its second
annual Huntington County Business Plan Competition on Wednesday. The
business plan was judged on the overall organization of the plan,
the purpose and overall strategy of the business, the innovativeness
of the idea, the marketing opportunity available, the management
capability of the idea, the investment potential and the financial
budget and forecasting of the business.

EXCEL student wins half-off fall tuition
Huntington University’s
EXCEL Adult Degree Programs recently awarded half off the cost
of tuition for the fall semester to Tamie Cavins, a student enrolled
at the program’s Wabash, Ind., site. She won the prize through a
drawing at the Wabash County 4-H Fair.
Cavins is employed
by the Probation Department of Wabash County and is a graduate of
Northfield High School. She earned her associate degree from
Michiana College in Fort Wayne, Ind., and is a mother of two.

Attorney to speak at library's fall
colloquium
Huntington University’s RichLyn Library will host John Branham for
the fall “Focus on Excellence” colloquium. Branham is an attorney
with Delaney, Hartburg, Roth and Garrott LLP in Huntington. The
event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 in the Johnson Conference
Room of the library. Branham will present his perspectives about the
Electoral College and his life as a prosecutor.
Admission is free,
and parking is available in the lot adjacent to the library. Light
refreshments will be served.

HU, Health Department to offer flu shots
Huntington University’s
Department of Nursing, in collaboration with the Huntington
County Department of Health, will offer flu shots to adults on Nov.
3. The clinic will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. in the university’s
Parkview Huntington Hospital Lab/Classroom, room 074, in the Science
Hall. The cost will be $20. Free blood pressure checks also will be

Choi
presents paper at conference
Dr.
Silvia Choi, assistant professor of Spanish, presented a
paper at the 18th Conference of the International
Association of Hispanic Women's Literature and Culture
sponsored by Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Ga., on
Oct. 16-18. The title of her paper was “La mujer y la
realidad social Mexicana en Morena en rojo de Miriam
Laurini."
Department of Education lauded
The Historic
Forks of the Wabash Museum named the Department of Education as the
“Volunteer Group of the Year.” Drs. Evelyn Priddy and Paul Worfel as
well as Prof. Kathy Turner worked with elementary education
majors to create a written curriculum that will accompany traveling
exhibits of artifacts. Classroom teachers may request the exhibits
and the lesson plans for use in their social studies instruction.
Recognition was also given to Dr. Lance Clark and to students in the
Department of Communication who recorded and edited narrations for
exhibits in the museum. The CDs provide interpretations for visitors
as they tour the main museum displays.
Women's
auxiliary says 'thank you'
The 19th
annual HU Women’s Auxiliary Garage Sale Benefit has brought in
funds that have exceeded those of all of the past sales with a
total of $1280. While the average income for the sales nears
$800, the former top was reached in 2001 when the sale took in
$1209. Meadows Hall second-floor lounge has received new
furniture which is being funded by the auxiliary projects this
year.
