Conference on Southern Religion, Social Practice, and Literature, Baylor

University. Scholars in literature, religion, oral history, anthropology,

philosophy, history, American studies, theater and other relevant

disciplines will be participating in a conference on the intersection of

religion and social practices in Southern culture to be held at Baylor

University. The deadline for papers, both academic and fictions, and panel

and performance proposals is July 17, 1998. Academic papers submitted for

Congratulations to Bob Swierenga who has taken early retirement

from Kent State University after 28 years in order to assume the position

of Research Professor in the newly-created A.C. Van Raalte Institute for

Historical Studies at Hope College. The purpose of the Institute is to

promote research in Dutch-American history and culture and is the first

such historical research center on this subject.
