'Who's Who' honors 20 Huntington University students

Chemistry education
major Abby Gaier presented a talk entitled “Investigation of the
Stabilities of Anthocyanins in Physiological Salt Solutions Using
UV-Visible Spectroscopy, Part 2” at the Indiana Academy of Science
Fall Meeting at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute,
Indiana, on October 7. Abby’s work represents a summer of research
at Huntington University in which she continued a study begun by
Jordan Phillips (a 2003 graduate) and Dr. Ruth Nalliah in
collaboration with Dr. David Bell of the Indiana University School
of Medicine, Ft. Wayne, in an investigation of the cardiovascular
effects of berry extracts. The work of Gaier, Nalliah, and Phillips
was funded by the Indiana Academy of Science, the Lutheran
Foundation, and the Ferne and Audry Hammel Research Fund of
Huntington University.

Dr. William Bordeaux, Dr.
Patrick Eggleton, Dr. Wayne Priest and Dr. Cindy Steury attended the
24th annual Lilly Conference on College Teaching at Miami
University. The conference featured many nationally and
internationally known speakers and included sessions on active
learning, assessment, course design, curriculum development,
critical thinking, diversity/multiculturalism, faculty development,
student learning, the scholarship of teaching, testing, and
technology.

Drs. Bill Bordeaux and Ruth Nalliah
attended a day-long training workshop at Lake Forest College in
August, 2004, entitled "FT-NMR in the
Undergraduate Laboratory." The workshop
provided practical ideas for undergraduate laboratory experiments
and their uses in industrial applications.

Drs. Bill Bordeaux and Ruth Nalliah,
along with chemistry students Victoria Hall, Christian (Thaddeus)
Hubley, Kelly Hotopp, and Tony Nafrady, attended the Second Annual
Chemistry Career Night at Butler University sponsored by the Indiana
Section of the American Chemical Society on Sept. 23, 2004. Faculty
and students heard from industrial and academic chemists regarding
careers in industry, forensics, and patent law.

Dr. Ruth Nalliah attended the annual
Pre-Medical Advisors' Conference at the Indiana University School of
Medicine in September.

Drs. Bruce Evans and Ruth Nalliah,
along with pre-medical students Wendy Campbell and Alicia Hoffmann,
attended the Region V Annual Medical Education Conference sponsored
by the Student National Medical Association at the Indiana
University School of Medicine on Oct.16, 2004.
Students and faculty attended seminars on topics including
minorities in research, the business of medicine, suturing, and
surviving the wards in medical school.

Drs. Beth Burch, Bill Bordeaux,
Bruce Evans, Francis Jones, and Ruth Nalliah attended a seminar at
Taylor University on October 18, entitled
“Evolving Creation Perspectives: Good Science? …. Good Theology?” by
Dr. Howard VanTill, Professor Emeritus of Calvin College.

On October 25, Drs. Bill Bordeaux and
Bruce Evans, along with students Jason
Clore, Victoria Hall, Alicia Hoffmann, Christian (Thaddeus) Hubley,
and Rosanne Weida attended a seminar at Taylor University by Dr.
William Dembski entitled “Information Theory and Digital Life:
Their Impact on the Intelligent Design Perspective of Origins."

The
Chemistry Department thanks Dr. Beth Burch for recently winning a scientific
instrument in a lottery held by Eli Lilly and Company. The company donated
several instrumentations and supplies to educational institutions. Burch won
an HP5890 gas chromatograph which she graciously donated to the Chemistry
Department!
